Kinds of Writing:
Descriptive (five senses, moral of the story, creative)
Paraphrase/Summary (overview, detailed, insight, and life lessons)
Persuasive/Theme paper – prove thesis statement, learn importance of transitioning, develop theme using concrete evidence, include commentary, and conclude with quotations from other sources and student’s judgment
In-Class Essay – preparation techniques, detailed analysis of prompt, and time management for writing of paper
Poetry forms- identify couplet stanza, quatrain stanza, alliteration, free verse, hyperbole, cinquain, Haiku, simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia
Creative writing (painting interpretation, create one's own ending, etc.)
Compare and Contrast
Quotation use – inserting and citing of quotes/Works cited page
Grading policy:
* All compositions must be typed.
* Homework will be posted on teacherweb.com each day under Mrs. Collins 7th and 8th Composition.
* If a computer problem arises, come in early to type at school. Printer problems (emergency only), send to scollins@cardenacademy.com , and this will be printed at school. See teacher before school begins!
* Routine assignments are due next class period. Failure to complete assignment on time will result in a homework clinic.
* Final papers are due on the day assigned. The grade will be lowered one full grade for each late day. (A to a B, B+ to a C+) If the student is ill or unable to attend school that day, arrangements must be made to have a paper turned in on time. The student may email, fax, or have a family member turn in the paper. At the very least, contact Mrs. Collins.
* A failed grade will require a parent signature.
* A student may make arrangements to see Mrs. Collins for help before or after school. Those students who seek help from the teacher are usually the ones who receive the higher grade. J Be responsible and take pride in all assignments completed!
