HOMEWORK & VOLUNTEERS

Weekly packets generally go home on Monday and need to be signed and
returned on Friday. All written homework should be done IN PENCIL. No ink or
markers, please. Any coloring should be done in crayons, please.

Weekly Spelling tests are given each Friday morning and will not start until
the first homework packet is sent home in late September, as discussed at
Back to School Night.

General Homework Responsibility - By signing your name in the appropriate
spots on the coversheet, you are saying that you have reviewed your child's
completed homework, and that it is done correctly. If you miss signing your
name or work is not finished, I will return it for your initials or for them
to finish. Please review the homework carefully before sending it to school
each Friday.

The second page is usually a Creative Writing sheet or a writing activity
and one I remove and include in class books for all to see. Please have your
child write NEATLY in PENCIL and color the page carefully. It should NOT be
a collection of quick messy sentences. Writing is a skill that we will be
working on ALL year and should not be overlooked. By the end of first grade,
your child should be able to write 3 to 6 complete sentences on a given
topic. This includes proper punctuation. Handwriting is a skill that
requires extra practice at home with proper letter formation. It is an
area you will need to help your child with. As spelling tests are given, I
want your child to use these words in their writing correctly. Please
understand the importance of writing and not take the creative writing sheet
as a quick 2 minute assignment. Thank you for your at-home support this
year!

Homework packets should NOT be returned any earlier than Friday. How can
your child and you sign off that they read Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday
evening if the packet is returned earlier than Friday? When your child signs
their name on the cover, and they should each week, they are acknowledging
that they read each of the 4 days at home, and did their best to complete
every homework sheet/project.

Please wait until Thursday evening or Friday morning to sign off on their
reading and review EACH PAGE one last time.

                               VOLUNTEERS

PLEASE READ - IMPORTANT!
A volunteer form must be completed and submitted to the Office for approval.
Tuberculosis test results must also be submitted and kept on file. TB test
must be updated every 4 years.

Thank you so much for volunteering in the classroom. You are a valued
part of our school family. I know your time in our classsroom will be
very rewarding for you, and it will be a tremendous help to us.

Please keep a few things in mind when you are working with the
students.

Please check in with the front office.

•	Be positive with the students and with the work that they do.
Maintain realistic standards for their work.

•	Feel free to help a student. However, we encourage students to do
all the work. Students learn by experimenting…so let them do
their work if at all possible. Ask them first, "What do you think
                you should do?"

•	Remember to keep what happens in the classroom IN the room. Please
don't discuss the lives or learning of the students you assist with
other students or adults who are not in the classroom. On the other
hand, if you have a concern, please feel free to bring it to my
	attention immediately.

•	Please remember to be on time. If you are unable to come at your
scheduled time, please call me at 331-5927 or send a note
	with your child.

•	Try to stay as professional as possible. Please keep in mind that
we are always role models for the students.

* PLEASE BE VERY QUIET WHILE TALKING TO THE CHILDREN IN THE CLASSROOM.
DURING READING GROUPS ESPECIALLY, THE CHILDREN ARE WORKING
INDEPENDENTLY AT THEIR DESKS,OR IN A SMALL GROUP AT A SPECIFIC
CENTER. THEY ARE INSTRUCTED TO DO SO VERY QUIETLY, UNLESS THEY
WHISPER TO ANOTHER CHILD AT THEIR TABLE TO ASK A QUESTION PERTAINING
TO THEIR WORK. ANYTHING LOUDER THAN A WHISPER DISTURBS OTHERS.

AS ADULTS, WE SET THE CLASSROOM TONE, SO PLEASE FOLLOW THE SAME
RULE, REMINDING THEM IF NECESSARY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Have fun with the students and enjoy yourself! We are very grateful to have
you come in and volunteer. Your support is imperative for a successful year.
