SPELLING

HOPE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Dear Parents,

Our spelling lists consist of 11 words. The first ten words are taken from
the 100 high frequency list for first grade, the Rebecca Sitton list for
first grade, and even some second grade words we find worthy to include. The
11th word is a challenge word. We encourage your child to practice their
spelling words using the spelling sheet attached to the homework packet.

1.	Say the word.
2.	Trace the word.
3.	Fold the paper on the crease to hide the word.
4.	Write the word on the line.
5.	Unfold the word and check the spelling.
6.	Fold the paper on the second crease.
7.	Write the word again.
8.	Unfold the paper and check the spelling.

You may also find the words in printed materials such as books and
magazines, or say the word and have your child orally finger spell it in the
air.

These words may seem easy to you and your child. However, we want to see
our students make the connection from memorizing words on an isolated list,
to actually using them correctly in their writing. Once they are tested on
them, they should be spelling them correctly in their everyday writing.

Please take note of this important fact. Writing is the last of four
language skills to develop in children. In order they are: listening,
speaking, reading and writing. Knowing this, we can understand why it
sometimes seems so difficult for children to acquire writing skills.
