FIRST GRADE NEWS

PLEASE READ...

Please have your child read nightly, review math flash cards and journal write!

If your child is a good reader, listen to them read a page or two before they continue on their own. Check for inflection and smoothness in their reading. They may or may not be fluent. Be sure to ask comprehension questions. I do not want them reading a book that is too hard. Some children are great readers but have difficulty remembering what they have just read.

Fluency

is the gateway

to comprehension.

If your child is still learning the sounds and is beginning to read, listen to your child read aloud each day. Help them sound out words they are having trouble decoding. Make this daily routine a special time for your family and remember to be patient and positive. Let them know how proud you are of their progress, and if you need any pointers, please ask me. O:)

Practice math flash cards

(both addition and subtraction)

and journal write

(story writing on a specific topic)

using proper punctuation

(capitals, periods, commas, question marks,

exclamation marks, and quotation marks).

ALL THESE SKILLS REQUIRE REPETITIVE PRACTICE!

Most importantly...

remember...

YOU are your child's best teacher!

Working in these areas will make a big difference

in how much progress your child will make

this first grade year.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs. Brady O:)
