CURRICULUM

Description

The Carlsbad Unified School District has adopted the Houghton Mifflin
series. We supplement our children with the SRA Distar program called
Reading Mastery.SRA is a phonics based program that has 2 parts.
Reading Mastery I is introduced and hopefully completed in kindergarten. It
has 160 lessons. Reading Mastery II is introduced for those children passing
a proficiency test. It also has 160 lessons and is strived to be completed
in first grade.

For Spelling, we test the children on the first grade high frequency words,
Rebecca Sitton words, and add some additional words. Each week there is one
challenging bonus word. These words may seem easy to some parents and
children, however, learning words in an isolated list is NOT THE SAME as
actually USING them in their everyday writing. In first grade that is the
goal of the spelling program. Any home support in writing is greatly
appreciated. Look for these spelling words being spelled and used correctly
in their writing. Check homework each week. It may surprise you that words
thought of as easy are forgot and misspelled. THANK YOU!

In Math, we use Touch Math, Mountain Math, Sunshine Math and Houghton
Mifflin.

In Science we use the Houghton Mifflin Discovery series, AIMS and the Foss
plants, weather, solids, liquids and gases units.

In Health we use the Here's Looking at You 2000 series, DARE program, the
Lions Quest Conflict Resolution program and the Kelso conflict resolution
program.

In Handwriting, we use the Zaner Bloser method.

In Visual and Performing Arts, we use the Spectra/artist and Kodaly music
instruction and dance.

In PE, we use the SPARK, age appropriate skills.

In Social Studies, we use Scholastic News and the Houghton Mifflin program.
