Portillo's Press
Only one more week of
school before Thanksgiving Holiday, do not forget that the kids have the entire
week of Thanksgiving off school.
Our Thanksgiving celebration is on Thursday, I know the kids will have
lots of fun. If you would like to
donate anything for the party, please see the sign up sheet on the north
door. You will not need to pack a
lunch for your child on Thursday.
The students will be participating in a variety of Native
American experience on Monday.
Students will be rotating through each of the Kindergarten classes and
experience a different aspect of a Native American lifestyle, art, games,
hunting & gathering, and crafts.
Some of the things we did in school this week in school
include:
ü
We started to learn about
the Native Americans and Pilgrims.
We have been discussing how life was long ago – I think this group of
children realizes how comfortable life is in the present, not one of them said
they would like to live “long ago.”
ü As
part of our unit on Native Americans, we learned how they valued and placed
importance on taking care of the land, air, and animals. We made a piece of art to reflect these
important points.
ü Wrote
in journals.
ü Made
Thanksgiving cards and decorations.
ü Played
Spin a Number. If you don’t play
games with you child every once in awhile, you might consider doing so. Some of the kids had a hard time
counting spaces, taking turns, and winning/losing.
ü Worked
on sight word recognition. The kids used the sight words to make
their own Bingo mat.
ü Went
on a Pattern Walk, and noticed that there are patterns all around us!
ü Mr.
Sexton is our Character Counts presenter. He will be discussing: Trustworthiness,
Respect, Responsibility, Fairness,
Caring, Citizenship. He did a lesson about
Citizenship last week. Last week,
he discussed voting, what it means, and who gets to vote – be sure to ask your
child about it (this might help them remember Duck vs. Farmer). We had another presentation today and
we will have one per month from now on.
Monday, Nov. 16th,
is a PLC Day, all students are Early Birds.
