                               Room 25 Newsletter
	Dear Parents,

Welcome to your child’s second grade school year. I’m looking forward to
getting to know the students and help them achieve academic success in a fun
and productive environment.
Back to School Night is Thursday, September 10th, so I will be addressing the
bulk of information you should know about the coming year at that time.
The class had a great first day together, and it was nice meeting so many of
you before and after school. Thank you for having your child here on time and
ready to learn. Yesterday and today we spent the bulk of our time reviewing
the rules, procedures, and curriculum. We also participated in many
‘getting-to-know-you’ activities.
The student’s homework reinforces the lessons/concepts learned in class. It
is also a great indicator as to what the tests will cover. Students will
begin having written homework next week. I’ll be sending home a homework
sheet that describes what assignments they’ll have. The school is using a
‘grade x 10 minutes’ formula (grade 2x10= 20) for targeting how much written
homework a child should have. Along with those 20 minutes, students should
spend time studying/preparing for tests and reading for 20 minutes. Please
make sure your child reads everyday (not just school nights) and fills out the
reading log (sent home today). As a former student of mine said, “Reading
isn’t homework, it’s homefun!” Students also should take an A.R. (Accelerated
Reader) test once they’ve finished reading a book.
Thank you so much for all of the materials donated to the classroom and to
the parents who pre-purchased the supply boxes. We have ample amounts of most
items, but please make sure your child has a pencil sharpener (with a
receptacle to hold the shavings) and some blue or black pens for correcting.
I’ll keep you informed when we’re in need of more supplies/materials. One way
to support the class is to purchase books and software from Scholastic (your
child received the order forms today – please return them by Tuesday,
September 8). Using the bonus points that accrue from parent’s orders, I’m
able to buy books to give to students as rewards for good behavior, academics,
A.R. points, and homework responsibility.

I look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night.

	Sincerely,

	Mike Nelson
