Homework <span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;">Enjoy second grade!<br /> <br /> Students still have homework packets, so you have a week to plan the work. A <br /> few notes about second graders and homework packets:<br /> <br /> <u>Handwriting</u>:<br />       If you notice that if your student’s handwriting is less than adequate, <br /> please encourage them to do high quality work. However, please notice that <br /> most of our class work has writing spaces that have a top, bottom, and <br /> middle line, to support their writing. I often notice that students writing <br /> on a single line with no top boundary have a great deal of difficulty <br /> forming their letters correctly. <br /> <u><br /> Your signature</u>: <br />      Your signature is applied to the homework packet to verify that you have <br /> monitored their work, and have checked to see that they have done complete, <br /> high quality work. Homework is their independent practice, but please feel <br /> free to give guidance, while allowing it to continue to be their own work.<br /> <br /> <u>Spelling</u>: <br />     The spelling homework is designed to help the students to have meaningful <br /> practice, in a timely manner, before the test. Late spelling homework shall <br /> be accepted with reduced points, however, homework done late will have <br /> limited value when done after the test. <br /> <br /> <u>Book reports</u>: <br />     Book reports will be done roughly once a month. The student should be <br /> prepared to orally deliver their written report. Parents will be requested <br /> to listen to and score oral reports.<br /> <br /> Reading:<br />     Reading homework is reported in conjunction with the homework packet. The <br /> reading goal is based on about 15 min. per day. The goal will be printed on <br /> the cover of homework packet. Please don't consider this a limit, but rather <br /> a minimum goal. more is better with reading. I enjoy the fact that second <br /> graders are not too old to be read to. Please know that the reading homework <br /> can be considered: reading to your child, taking turns reading with your <br /> child, your child reading to you, your child reading to your dog, cat, teddy <br /> bear, or other inanimate object, reading to their little brother or sister, <br /> or simple silent reading. More is better. I find that most City Tree <br /> students are great technical readers, but often, but often struggle with <br /> reading comprehension.  Reading comprehension is a developing skill at second grade.  We work on it is reading groups. We practice writing questions to answer about the passage, discuss "important" information, and we reread when we don't know. <br /> <br />     My most significant reading goal for second graders is for them to learn to <br /> find books that they like, and therefore look forward to reading. If reading <br /> becomes a chore, then reading will be put in the category with brussel <br /> sprouts and liver (no offence to those foods), and will be done only under <br /> duress. <br /> <br /> Other homework:<br /> <br /> There will be other ad-hoc assignments. Watch for notes home if they require <br /> any parent oversight.</span></span> Automatically clean input to optimize for the web.
