CONDIT SCHOOL SONG
(to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”)
Condit School is a great place,
Condit is number one (#1)!
Our students work hard
And we learn our best,
And every challenge
We meet with success.
Oh, yes,
Condit School is a great place,
Condit is number one,
We will stand proud
Singing our song
As we march along!!!

GENERAL INFORMATION
ABSENCES:
Parents are to call the Attendance Hotline at 398-0300, ext. 66003 if their
child is absent from school for any reason. On the answering machine, state
the child’s name, teacher’s name, the reason the child is absent, and the
number of days anticipated for the absence. The answering machine operates
24 hours per day.
Schools no longer receive Average Daily Attendance (ADA) funding for excused
absences. Funding is received only for actual attendance. If a child will
be absent for 5 or more days, an Independent Study Agreement should be
arranged with the classroom teacher at least 3 days prior to the absences.
According to legal regulations, all work specified in the agreement must now
be completed and returned to the school within 3 days of the child’s return
to school, or the agreement will be invalid and the absences will be
unexcused.
ACCIDENT INSURANCE:
The school district may not carry medical accident insurance. It may carry
only liability insurance. Therefore, if your child has an accident at
school or going to or from school, he/she is NOT covered by medical
insurance. In view of this fact, our PFA board urges each parent to check
his/her insurance policy to see if he/she has this coverage for his/her
child. If you find that your child is not covered, the PFA board seriously
recommends that you consider the relatively inexpensive Myers-Stevens
Student Accident & Health Insurance school insurance policy. Information
regarding this coverage is distributed through the school each September.
BIRTHDAYS
Condit School has a tradition of announcing birthdays each day in
celebration of your child’s birthday. (Weekend or holiday birthdays are
typically announced the Friday prior to their birthday – we also announce
half birthdays for those students who have their birthdays in the summer).
At this time or at their recess time students are invited to the office to
select a birthday book of their choice. These books are funded by the PFA
through points earned in our annual book fairs. Additionally, if you would
like to celebrate your child’s birthday with a healthy classroom treat,
please check with your child’s teacher for specific classroom procedures.
In order to avoid hurt feelings and embarrassment unless all classmates are
invited to a birthday party, we request that party invitations be mailed or
delivered off of school grounds. Special deliveries, such as balloon
bouquets, flowers, stuffed animals and wrapped presents will NOT be
delivered to the classroom. We will notify the student to pick up the item
in the office after school is dismissed.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS
If you have a change of residence, telephone number, work number, work
location, or daycare provider, please notify the Condit School office as
soon as possible.
CHARACTER COUNTS:
The Character Counts program is not a separate curriculum; rather,
instruction about the character traits (trustworthiness, respect,
responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship) are woven into existing
curriculum and included in classroom discussions that occur throughout the
school year. Parents are assured that this is neither a “values
clarification” program nor a religious program in any way. For example,
the “trustworthiness” character trait will focus upon honesty, integrity,
promise-keeping, and loyalty, and the “respect” trait will focus upon
courtesy, nonviolence, tolerance, and dignity.
CIVIL DEFENSE AND DISASTER PROCEDURES:
“Educators have a moral and professional obligation of training pupils in
preparedness for safety during a disaster - natural or war caused.” (CUSD
Disaster Preparedness Manual, page 4) In accordance with the board-adopted
plan to be used in the event of a disaster, children are to be retained at
Condit School under supervision of their teachers until clearance is
received from the superintendent’s office to release them to their parents
or to evacuate the premises. This is necessary to maintain information
regarding children’s whereabouts. In the event that children must be
evacuated from the school at a time other than regular dismissal
time, “parents should assume full responsibility for their children’s
identification, supervision and protection,” (CUSD, page 4). The disaster
plan calls for students to be moved to El Roble Intermediate School after 24
hours.
A family plan should be developed with each child and reviewed periodically
to be ready to implement in the event you are away from home during an
emergency. Parents who work a distance from Claremont would be well advised
to list at least 6 – 8 people on their child’s emergency card who would be
authorized to pick up and care for their child in the event of an emergency.
CLASSROOM COURTESY
Parents, guardians, and child care providers are asked to wait in front of
the school to pick up children after school rather than waiting on campus
outside classrooms or in the bike rack area. Adult conversations in the
hallways can disrupt classroom instruction for as much as 30 minutes per
day. In addition, it is difficult for 600+ children to navigate their way
through groups of parents in the hallways.
CONDIT SCHOOL AGE CHILD CARE: Child Care Office: 625-1839
The Condit School Age Child Care (S.A.C.C.) program is open from 7:00 a.m.
to 6:00 p.m. daily during the school year, except holidays. All students
must be signed in and signed out each day. Parents may use the north
parking lot to drop off and pick up their child care children before 7:45
a.m. or after 3:00 p.m. only, and only using designated parking. There are
three such parking spaces in the north parking lot, so there should be no
need to park in teacher spaces.
DRESS STANDARDS:
The general appearance of our students here at Condit School has always been
something of which we are proud. We believe that students’ attitude and
conduct may be affected by the way in which they dress for school. We,
therefore, seek to maintain the high standards Condit parents have set for
their children in past years. Long dresses, heavy boots and baggy or saggy
clothing present problems during activity periods and are generally
discouraged. For safety reasons, shoes with a heel strap must be worn at
all times. Flip-flops and other sandals without a heel strap are not
acceptable footwear. Unnatural hair colors or tints, midriff tops, or make-
up are inappropriate for school. Students may not dress in a way that
establishes them as an exclusive group or clique, such as a group that wears
a particular sweatshirt or a particular shoe style. ANY CLOTHING OR
APPEARANCE FACTORS THAT ARE DISRUPTIVE TO THE NORMAL SCHOOL ROUTINE ARE
UNACCEPTABLE.
EMERGENCY CARD
The main purpose of this card is to help us locate the parent or authorized
caregiver in the event of illness or an emergency that involves your child.
It is very important that we be able to locate you at any time. Please list
phone numbers of neighbors and/or other daycare providers who may pick up
your child when he/she feels ill and you are not at home. In special cases
you may wish to call and give the school secretary a number where you can be
reached for the day. New emergency cards must be completed each September.
Please list on the card, in red if possible, any allergies or serious
medical problems of which the school should be apprised. Also, list any
special arrangements you may have made for another person to pick up your
child regularly. Please complete the emergency card and return it to school
immediately. This is very important for your child’s safety and comfort.
FIELD TRIPS:
Condit School believes that educational field trips are an important means
for reinforcing learning experiences in the classroom. To that end, each
grade level plans at least one field trip each year to initiate or culminate
a unit of instruction. Teachers are responsible for planning the field
trips to maximize student learning. Student participation in field trips is
the choice of parents. Students who do not participate in a particular
field trip are expected to attend school on the day of the trip and to
complete a parallel activity while in attendance. The school is dependent
upon parent donations to fund field trips. If a student or parent chooses
not to contribute, there is no penalty nor will it affect the student’s
ability to participate in any planned activities, unless the trip needs to
be cancelled due to insufficient funds collected.
•Supervision by chaperones: The school and district assume a high level of
liability when we take students on field trips. We must have chaperones
that will be fully focused only on the needs of the grade level students.
Parents who have other children with them besides the students they are
assigned to chaperone will not be able to provide the level of supervision
expected by our chaperones. If you were a parent who could not attend the
trip and trusted that the school would provide adequate supervision for your
child, you would expect no less. You would not want your child to be with a
chaperone whose attention was divided because of needing to care for the
needs of additional unauthorized children. For the above reasons,
chaperones may not bring along other children to attend the field trip
activity.
•Use of private drivers to transport students: While we would like for all
students to ride the bus to and from the field trip location so as to
benefit from all of the group experiences related to the trip, we understand
that some parents would prefer to transport their own child. Parents may do
so as long as they are transporting only their own child and no other
students. The child who is being privately transported by his/her parent
must be signed out officially in the office before the trip and signed back
in upon return. Private drivers may transport other parents, if they so
wish, but they may not transport the children of those parents. This
requirement is in place in order to protect the district and school from
liability, as well as that of the private driver, in the event of an
accident.
•Riding the bus both ways: Students who ride the bus to the field trip are
expected to ride the bus back to the school, as well. Students who ride the
bus may not be signed out from the teacher while on the field trip.
•Checking out other children to attend the trip: Field trips are scheduled
to enhance a unit of instruction within the grade level curriculum. It is
not appropriate to check out siblings or other children who are not students
in that grade level to attend the field trip. Children who are checked out
of school to attend a field trip scheduled for another grade level will be
reported as an unexcused absence.
GETTING READY FOR SCHOOL:
Getting ready for school begins the night before. All students need a good
night's sleep in order to be at their best the next day. Students should get
at least eight hours of sleep. Because mornings are usually so busy, it
would be a good idea to do some preparation the night before. Take a bath
or shower, get clothes ready for the next day, put all books and homework in
one place, and have lunch money if you plan to buy. Doing all these things
the night before will give more time in the morning for a good breakfast.
HEALTH AND ATTENDANCE:
The aim of our health services program is to promote healthful living habits
and to assist in preventing the spread of disease. If your child is exposed
to any contagious disease, please notify the school office. Should your
child become ill before school time in the morning, please keep him/her
home. CALL THE SCHOOL’S ATTENDANCE HOTLINE (398-0300) ON EACH DAY OF
ABSENCE AND REPORT THE REASON. Upon returning to school after an illness
(if the office has not been notified by telephone), your child must bring a
written excuse to the office.
HOMEWORK POLICY:
1.Homework is assigned at the discretion of the teacher.
2.The following list of time allocations is to give the parent an idea of
what is considered appropriate for the grade level.
3.The times provide a general "rule of thumb" as every child works at a
different pace.
4.Parents having questions concerning homework should consult the child’s
teacher.
Kindergarten Informal
1st Grade 15 minutes (Monday - Thursday)
2nd Grade 15 - 30 minutes (Monday - Thursday)
3rd Grade 30 minutes (Monday - Thursday)
4th Grade 1 hour (Monday - Thursday)
5th Grade 1 - 2 hours (Monday - Thursday)
6th Grade 1 - 2 hours (Monday - Thursday)
Homework needs to be completed by the child as independently as possible so
s/he can practice the skills being developed, and the teacher can determine
if the lesson was successfully learned. Please try to limit extracurricular
activities to just a couple hours per week. Some students are involved in
so many extracurricular activities (various organized sports teams, piano
lessons, scouts, dance, etc.) that homework does not get completed
satisfactorily. Homework needs to be the number one priority.
LIBRARY:
The library is staffed with a 6 hour per day library/media assistant and by
parent and community volunteers. Each classroom has an assigned time for
using the library. The library is open 15 minutes before school, during many
recesses and at lunch, giving students additional time to use the library.
In addition Condit’s Student Council and parent volunteers operate the
Accelerated Reader computer-managed reading incentive program in which
students earn points and prizes for reading and comprehending a wide range
of titles.
Library Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Wednesday 8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BOOKS THEY CHECK OUT.
LOST BOOKS ARE TO BE REPLACED AT COST.
LOST AND FOUND:
Many articles become lost or are left unclaimed. It helps if personal
belongings are marked so that your child can identify his/her articles
easily. Clothing, lunch boxes, etc. left unclaimed for several weeks will
be given to a charitable organization.
LUNCH PROGRAM:
Hot lunches, which include milk, are available in the cafeteria for grades
K - 6. Arrangements for purchasing lunch can be made by children any
morning before school by adding lunch credits to their cafeteria account. It
is suggested that parents purchase lunch credits in larger quantities (a
week to a month at a time) to reduce the need for long lines of students and
parents to make frequent, smaller purchases. The cost is $2.00 for the full
lunch. If children wish to purchase white or chocolate milk separately to
supplement a lunch brought from home, the cost is 25¢. Buying a 50¢ “snack”
ticket before school will allow a student to purchase homemade cookies,
granola bars, cheese and crackers, fruit juice, or Snapple to supplement the
lunch. Snack tickets can be purchased in advance in quantities. Cafeteria
workers do not accept money during service periods for sanitary reasons. No
food is to leave the campus for health and legal reasons. This is
especially important on the last day of school when sack lunches are
purchased.
Lunch Hours: Kindergarten: 11:30 – 12:15
Grade 1-2 Lunch: 11:40 - 12:25
Grade 5-6 Lunch: 12:00 - 12:45
Grade 3-4 Lunch: 12:15 - 1:00
MEDICAL AND DENTAL APPOINTMENTS:
Parents who wish to have children excused for appointments should send a
note to the teacher. The parent must come to the office to sign the child
out at the proper time.
MEDICATION AT SCHOOL:
Any student needing prescription or non-prescription medication during the
school day may be assisted by the health assistant or other designated
school personnel, provided the school nurse receives:
A District Medication Authorization Form from the student’s physician
detailing the method, amount, and time schedule by which the medication is
to be taken. This form also requests a parent signature requesting that the
school nurse or other school personnel assist their child in taking
medication.
The forms are kept in the nurse’s office to document both the doctor
instructions and the parent request. Students may not keep medication in the
classroom or in backpacks for self-ministration. All medication
(prescription and non-prescription) must be kept in the office. The
exception to this would be students with inhalers or epi-pens whose doctor
has authorized classroom possession in writing and has provided training.
PARENT FACULTY ASSOCIATION – PFA
The PFA at Condit School is an organization that helps support and enhances
the general educational program of the school. Meetings are held at the
school on the first Wednesday night of each month (with a few exceptions)
and all parents are invited to attend. Parents, faculty, and staff join
together as volunteers to provide the following:
•Communication between the school and the parents through the Condit
Calendar, the weekly communication envelopes and the Condit Caller (included
with each family PFA membership)
•Volunteer assistants in the classrooms, library, and computer lab
•Fundraising activities to assist with the educational needs of the school
•School-wide social and recreational activities
•Health and safety programs such as vision, hearing, and dental screening
and bicycle safety days
•Disaster preparedness for the entire student body and staff
•Publicity for school activities
•Fine Arts programs and assemblies
•Participation in Claremont PFA Association
The president this year is Cindy Duque. Call her or any of the PFA
Committee members if you have any questions or would like to volunteer. We
encourage you to participate. Working together makes such a difference!

PARENT – TEACHER – STUDENT CONFERENCES:
Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences will be scheduled in November and in
March. Teachers have been encouraged to use the conferences for goal
setting as well as reporting progress. This procedure has been approved by
the Board of Education. It is important that the student attend the
conference. A final report card will be issued on the last day of school.
If you have questions or concerns about your child or you have important
information to share, do not feel that you need to wait until the formally
scheduled Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences. Contact the teacher at the
time of the question, comment or concern.
PARKING:
The south parking lot is strictly a bus drop-off zone and staff parking
area. The only student drop-off areas are the curbs on Mountain and Scripps
Avenues or the south parking lot at North Hills Church. The curb along the
south lot, directly in front of the school, is designated as a loading zone
and is for pick-up and drop-off of students. VEHICLES ARE NOT TO BE PARKED
IN THIS AREA AT ANY TIME. There is to be a continual flow of traffic in the
loading zone area. The parking lots are for staff parking only. THERE ARE
NO DROP-OFFS OR PICK-UPS IN EITHER PARKING LOT.
PARENT SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS AFTER SCHOOL:
It has been a tradition at Condit for parents to visit in front of the
school at dismissal time. It is part of what makes parents feel so welcome
at our school. It would help our staff tremendously if parents would
supervise their children while they are visiting. It is very uncomfortable
for our staff to discipline children who are getting into mischief and/or
violating school rules when their parents are standing right there. Your
cooperation and support will be greatly appreciated.
PLAY ACTIVITIES, AFTER SCHOOL:
There will be supervised after school activities at Lewis Park and Memorial
Park for grades 1-6 under the sponsorship of the Claremont Recreation
Department. Please call City Recreation Department for the time and
information. This is in addition to Condit’s School Age Child Care
program. THERE IS NO PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION AFTER SCHOOL HOURS AT CONDIT
SCHOOL.
PETS ON CAMPUS:
While parents may believe their pet is friendly and safe around children,
the behavior may be very different when lots of children are running around
before or after school. Neither you nor the school would welcome the
possible litigation should a pet bite a child. Please leave your pets at
home.
PHONE CALLS
Students are not allowed to use the telephone except for emergencies.
Leaving assignments, lunches, musical instruments, or other items at home
are not considered an emergency. If a teacher determines it is necessary for
a student to use the phone, a signed note from the teacher must be presented
to the school secretary. Parents are urged not to telephone or send messages
to students except in the case of an emergency.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS A REQUIRED SUBJECT:
Physical fitness is important for all students. Regular physical education
instruction can lead to a lifelong interest in being physically fit. Per
California Education Code, P.E. is required for all students. Our students
are expected to participate in regular P.E. instruction. If a child needs to
be excused from P.E. for more than 3 days due to recovery from an injury or
serious illness, a doctor’s note to that effect will be required indicating
the reason that the child cannot participate in P.E. and the duration of the
P.E. excuse. If a student is too sick or injured to participate in P.E.,
s/he is too sick or injured to run around at recess.
PROBLEMS OR CONCERNS
If a problem or concern arises, students should talk to their teacher. If
the student still has a concern, they should talk to the principal. This
same guideline is requested of parents.
REDUCING CLASSROOM DISRUPTIONS:
Classroom disruptions interrupt the continuity of instruction. Our staff
wants to come close to eliminating classroom disruptions so that students
can benefit from a continuous flow of instructions and maximum use of
instructional minutes. Procedures initiated several years ago resulted in
an elimination of about 70-80% of the interruptions we were experiencing.
*** Lunches, Snacks, and Homework: Children generally know when they come
to school without their lunches, snacks, or homework/projects. They need to
get in the habit of checking the office on their own at recess or lunch for
any missing items brought in by their parents. Parents who know they will
be dropping off something later need to discuss this with their child in the
morning before school so their child will be more alert to the need to check
the office.
*** Play Dates and/or Transportation Arrangements: All arrangements for
children to go home after school with someone else need to be made in
advance so parents can inform their child of the arrangements before
school. There will be emergencies from time to time that will require us to
disrupt the classroom to inform the child of the transportation change, but
over time, the office staff will know if a parent is habitual about making
last minute arrangements. Play date arrangements would not constitute an
emergency.
*** Doctor and Dentist Appointments: If your child has a doctor, dentist,
orthodontist, or other appointment during the school day, please send a note
to school with your child indicating the time you will come to the office to
sign your child out. The note would be given to the teacher in the morning
so the child will come to the office at the given time. Parents need to
discuss the time of the appointment with their children so they can assist
in keeping track of the time to go to the office.
***Early Checkout: Some children have been checked out of school 10-20
minutes before dismissal time. When this occurs on a fairly regular
basis, it tends to be due to parent convenience. Early checkouts force the
teacher to prematurely put closure on instruction so he/she can review
homework, etc. with the group altogether. Ending instruction 10 minutes
early may not sound too bad, but if a classroom were to lose 10 minutes per
day throughout the school year that would be a loss of 1800 minutes, or 30
hours, per school year.
***Drop-By Visits to Classrooms and/or Unscheduled Mini-Conferences: Our
teachers value their ongoing, close communications with parents; however,
when that communication is impacting instructional time, our children are
being put at a disadvantage. Some parents are bypassing the office to drop
off lunches or homework. This is not appropriate since visitors are
required by law to check in with the office. It is also highly disruptive
to instruction when a parent drops by the classroom to deliver something to
a child or to ask the teacher a question.
REDUCING HALLWAY TRAFFIC AND PROMOTING INDEPENDENCE:
Parents who walk their child onto the campus are reminded to leave that
child in the main hallway and let him/her proceed the rest of the way to the
playground or to class on his/her own. This reduces traffic in our hallways
plus promotes increased independence in our students. Parents are to wait
for their child in the front of the school at dismissal time.
REPORT CARDS
Report cards are discussed and distributed to parents during conference week
after the 1st and 2nd grading periods. Students will take home report cards
following the 3rd grading period.
SAFETY AND TRANSPORTATION:
Our school is continually striving to help children become safety conscious.
With school and home setting an example, we can help our children live more
safely. The following are some of the standards we observe at Condit School.
1.Students are expected to use the sidewalks and are not allowed to walk
through either of the parking lots. Parents are asked to be good examples
and refrain from walking through the parking lots, as well.
2.The only authorized crossing of Mountain Avenue is in front of the school
at the signal. This applies to pedestrians and bicycle riders alike.
Bicycle riders from north of Baseline may use the signal at Baseline and
Mountain Avenue. Students are asked not to cross Mountain Avenue at
Scripps. Impatient drivers make this intersection hazardous.
3.Bicycles are the only form of student transportation allowed.
Skateboards, scooters, roller blades, and heelies are NOT allowed.
4.Bicycle riders must follow all traffic regulations.
5.Parents who need to take their child out of school must sign out in the
office.
6.Children not enrolled in day care are expected to go directly home after
school, as there is no after school supervision of Condit’s playground.
7.If parents are picking up students dismissed at 2:10 and/or 2:20 and 2:35,
they need to arrive early enough to supervise those dismissed at 2:10.
8.Children are not permitted to go to the homes of other children for lunch.
Because of the unusually fast and heavy traffic along Mountain Avenue, we
request that children in grades K-3 not ride bicycles to school. Bicycles
must be walked while on campus. Bicycles will be parked in a fenced
enclosure during the school day. There is no available protection from
rain, so it is advisable to leave bicycles at home on rainy days. For the
protection of their property, children are required to lock their bicycles
to the bike rack. BIKE RIDERS MUST WEAR HELMETS.
SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL:
The School Site Council is an important school organization comprised of
Condit staff and parents to help set the direction of the school program.
They meet the third Wednesday of each month (with occasional exceptions
which are announced in the Principal’s Newsletter) to discuss and evaluate
the curriculum and the Continuous School Improvement Plan. Members are
elected for two-year terms of office. Elections take place each April. All
Condit parents are welcome to attend the meetings.
SCHOOLWIDE DISCIPLINE PLAN
The following plan represents a general summary of the specific rules
developed by teachers and parents in the “Code of Conduct”. The specific
rules regarding student safety, use of playground equipment, and other
conduct standards from which the general rules were drafted are available in
the office for review.
General Rules:
1.No fighting, wrestling, or unwanted touching of any kind.
2.Use playground equipment safely and in appropriate areas only.
3.Play school games safely and with good sportsmanship.
4.No throwing of rocks, sand, sticks, or other dangerous objects.
5.Promptly follow directions the first time given.
6.No loud noise, running or loitering in arcades, hallways or restrooms.
7.Show respect for adults, peers, and property in words and actions. No
foul language or “back- talk”.
8.Freeze appropriately when bell rings. Walk directly to class when
dismissed. Do not run and do not continue playing.
9.Sit quietly when benched.
10.Remain on playground unless permission given by school staff to leave
playground.
11.Participate in P.E.
12.No gum chewing or spitting.
Positive Incentives
Students who receive one or fewer discipline tickets and no suspensions
during a trimester will be eligible to attend a special “Good Behavior
Assembly” scheduled three times each year. Students will be excused from
class to attend a fun and motivating assembly and receive a certificate.
Consequences for Trimester
1st Discipline Ticket - Student is benched for 15 minutes at lunch recess,
(eligible for “Good Behavior Assembly”).
2nd Discipline Ticket - Student is benched for 30 minutes at lunch recess.
3rd Discipline Ticket - Student is benched for 30 minutes at lunch recess
plus 30 minutes of detention on Friday after school.
4th Discipline Ticket - A parent-student-teacher conference will be
scheduled with the principal to determine strategies to deter further
discipline tickets that lead to suspension.
5th Discipline Ticket - Depending upon the severity of the behavior, the
student will either be assigned an in-school or out-of-school suspension.
6th Discipline Ticket - Out-of-school suspension. The first suspension will
be for one day, unless circumstances require a more severe consequence. Each
additional discipline ticket during the trimester will result in a
progressive number of days for suspension.
•At the beginning of the next trimester, all students start with a clean
slate and are eligible for the next Good Behavior Assembly.
•Certain behaviors will result in an immediate parent-student-teacher
conference with the principal, with specific consequences determined and a
suspension warning issued, for acts such as sexual harassment, possession of
matches, ongoing physical conflict, bias-motivated incidents, and other acts
that endanger others.
•Some behaviors are considered so severe as to result in immediate
suspension from school, such as fist fighting, fighting in the classroom, an
aggravated attempt to inflict physical injury on another, severe defiance of
the teacher or principal, vandalism, possession of a dangerous object or
weapon, or possession of tobacco or any drug, or possession of a look-alike
drug or toy weapon.
Grounds for Suspension and Expulsion
California Education Codes 48900 & 48915 enumerate the infractions that can
lead to a student's suspension or expulsion.
E.C. 48900: A student may be suspended for:
(a)Attempting or threatening to cause physical injury to another person.
(b)Possessing, selling or otherwise furnishing any firearm, knife,
explosive, or other dangerous object.
(c)Unlawfully possessing, using, selling or otherwise furnishing or being
under the influence of any controlled substance, alcoholic beverage or an
intoxicant of any kind.
(d)Unlawfully offering, arranging or negotiating to sell any controlled
substance, alcoholic beverage, or an intoxicant of any kind.
(e)Committing or attempting to committing robbery or extortion.
(f)Causing or attempting to cause damage to school property or private
property.
(g)Stealing or attempting to steal school property or private property.
(h)Possessing or using tobacco.
(i)Committing an obscene act or engaging in habitual profanity or vulgarity.
(j)Unlawful possession of or negotiating to sell any drug paraphernalia.
(k)Disrupting school activities or otherwise willfully defying the valid
authority of supervisors, teachers, administrators, school officials, or
other school personnel engaged in the performance of their duties.
(l)Knowingly receiving stolen school property or private property.
(m)Possessing an imitation firearm.
(n)Committing or attempting to commit a sexual assault.
(o)Harassing, threatening, or intimidating a student witness.

eSCRIP:
“eScrip” is an easy way to raise money for our school without extra costs to
you while you do your regular shopping. Every time a Vons Club, Chevron,
ATM, VISA, MasterCard, or Discover card that is registered with the eSCRIP
program is used at participating merchants Condit receives a contribution to
our PFA General Fund. This fund promotes school assemblies, our performing
arts program, technology support, our library incentive program and many
classroom enrichments.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Sexual harassment includes verbal, visual, or physical conduct on the basis
of sex that has the effect of creating an intimidating or hostile
environment. Sexual harassment at school or school activities is prohibited.
STUDENT COUNCIL:
The purpose of Student Council is to provide students an opportunity to
experience the responsibility of leadership and service to the school.
Representatives are selected from each 4th through 6th grade room. Student
Council Officers are elected by a vote of the upper grade student body.
Student Council meets bi-weekly with the teacher advisors to discuss student
welfare and morale and to plan projects and activities. Student Council has
sponsored such fun activities as Twins Day, Crazy Hair Day or Pajama Day.
STUDENT SUCCESS TEAM
This Student Success Team (SST) is a regular education function. It is a
process of reviewing individual student problems and planning alternative
instructional strategies to be utilized in improving student achievement
and/or behavior. The SST works with the staff and parents as a team to
review individual student strengths and weaknesses. The team identifies the
major problems, develops strategies, delineates responsibilities, and
provides mutual support for implementation. Teachers and/or parents may
refer a student to the SST. Parents may contact a teacher or the principal
to begin the referral.
TARDY POLICY:
Every effort should be made to insure that students arrive at school on
time. When students arrive late to class, this causes an interruption and
students miss morning instructions. We understand that there will be times
when situations arise that cause a student to arrive late at school. To
allow for those situations, students may be late no more than 3 times
without penalty. If a student is late a 4th time, they will be assigned a
lunchtime detention for that tardy and any subsequent tardies.
If a student is approved to attend Condit School on an intradistrict or
interdistrict transfer and is frequently tardy to school or late being
picked up, the transfer may be revoked.
TOYS AND EQUIPMENT:
No toys, balls, or equipment may be brought from home without special
permission from the teacher. This would include electronic games, cameras,
CD players, radios, game cards, and trading cards. Such items may not be
taken out to the playground or lunch tables. Students may bring cell phones
to school, but they must remain in their backpacks throughout the day. They
may not be used or out of their backpacks until after school.
VISITATION:
Condit parents and adult residents of the area are encouraged to visit the
school and participate in school events. If you would like to visit in a
classroom during the school day, please give the teacher 24 hours notice and
check in at the office prior to your classroom visit. Visitors will receive
a visitor badge when checking in which needs to be worn at all times while
on campus. Teachers have been instructed to redirect any parents not
wearing a Condit badge to the office to provide assurance that all adults on
the campus are authorized to be there.
VOLUNTEERS
Condit has a long tradition of parents volunteering in classes and helping
teachers in numerous ways. Active parent involvement was a major
contributing factor to Condit being selected as a 1998 California
Distinguished School. Parents who volunteer in classrooms, the library,
and/or the computer lab on a weekly basis will be issued an annual district-
provided Volunteer badge that needs to be worn each day they volunteer.
Once a regular volunteer has signed in at the office and received a
volunteer badge, s/he does not need to sign in at the office again for the
school year. This badge does not authorize parents to wander around campus
or to drop into classrooms without prior notice. Each regular volunteer has
a specific classroom of assignment and a set time for the volunteer work to
take place. All classroom volunteers are required to sign in and sign out
of the classroom for each visit. All off-schedule school visits require
that parents sign in at the office. All volunteers who have repeated
contact with students are required to provide proof of a negative result for
a Mantoux tuberculosis test. Mantoux TB results are valid for four years.
Parent volunteers are reminded that they need to be confidential about the
students with whom they work.
WISH LIST / WISH NIGHT:
Our PFA Wish Night is a way for parents and friends of Condit School to make
tax-deductible donations which further enrich our instructional program for
the current school year. Wish Lists of items teachers and support staff
would like to have for their classrooms were available at Back-to-School-
Night. Any donation towards items on the lists is greatly appreciated.
Donations are considered anonymous in the sense that teachers are not told
which families contributed and which did not. If a student or parent
chooses not to contribute, there is no penalty nor will it affect the
student’s ability to participate in any planned activities.
WORKROOM HOURS:
We are happy to have volunteers working in our workroom during the day with
the exception of recess times when staff members run up to the office to
check their mailboxes for messages, use the copier, make phone calls, visit
the restroom, etc. With about 50 staff members needing access to the
workroom during recess times, we have established that the workroom is open
to volunteers every day from 8:15-10:00am, 10:45-11:30am, and 1:00-2:15pm.
Thank you for your cooperation. Our workroom hours will be posted on the
door as a reminder.
