I am excited for students to learn Spanish and to explore the diversity of Spanish speaking
countries. Spanish is a very useful language here and abroad. I encourage them to further
their knowledge beyond the classroom.
Curriculum
Text: Navegando 1 , EMC Publishing, 2005
Navegando 1 workbook
Spanish 1A will cover chapters 1-6A
Spanish 1B will review 1A concepts and cover lessons 6B-9B
Speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish will be incorporated into each
chapter.
Group and partner work, role playing, skits, art, music, singing, videos, reading,
cartoons, navigating the web, cultural study, research, learning games, and other activities
may be used to enhance the learning and enjoyment of Spanish.
Quizzes and Tests Pruebas y exmenes
Tests will be given at the end of each lesson. Assessments may be made-up due to an
absence within a week. Test and quiz retakes will be available for students earning less
than a 75% score. Retakes will be on Wednesdays during lunch. They can be taken no
more than two weeks later than the original assessment. They need to demonstrate
increased comprehension and may only raise the score to 75%. Scores of 70% and below
on tests and quizzes will require a parent signature.
Homework - Tarea
Homework is for practice and memorization of concepts learned in class. A regular
assignment could take between 10-30 minutes. Additional time should be spent
memorizing vocabulary and verb conjugations. Students are expected to do homework at
home and correct their homework in class. Homework is due at the beginning of class.
Students will be given one late pass per quarter for half credit, no other late homework
will be accepted (exceptions are made for larger assignments). Absent students will be
expected to complete any missed homework and will receive points when it is shown to
the teacher no more than 5 days after returning from the absence. Students are to record
assignments in the school assignment book.
Participation Participacin
A participation grade will be given at the end of each quarter (about 15% of grade). It
includes volunteering answers in class, actively participating in Spanish activities,
speaking Spanish, being prepared for class, having a positive attitude, showing effort,
respecting the classroom environment, and working on alternative Spanish activities when
finished early (not homework). Students may check my chart through the quarter to view
their progression.
Grades - Notas
Points will be totaled for participation, tests, quizzes, warm-ups, projects, skits, activities,
and homework.
 94%=A 90%=A-
 87%=B+ 84%=B 80%=B-
