Hello D. W. Long Families,

We want to officially welcome you to the start of the new school year. We are fortunate to partner with you and the PTO to make our school an amazing learning atmosphere for students. We want to thank each of you for the features we are adding to our school thanks to your commitment to PTO. This coming year we have invested in adding leveled readers to our school library. Reading is foundational to raising student achievement. That is why we have converted part of our computer lab into a literacy lab. We are asking for your commitment to reading as well. Please take the time to read with your child daily. Reading impacts all subjects. The more that your child develops this skill the greater the impact on their academics.

Our school district’s theme for the school year is Learning is our Superpower. At DW Long, we have taken on the Superhero powers to help ensure our students achieve their best in the classroom and on the playground. We truly believe in each child’s academic, social, and emotional development. Throughout the school year, look for the different opportunities that your child can stay engaged in school. Additionally, there will be opportunities for our 1st-5th grade students to be engaged in our BRAVO Program after school. We look forward to serving your child this year as we continue to develop students that Learn Today to Lead Tomorrow.

Respect, Responsibility, Cooperation, and Safety are the universal expectations to promote a positive school climate for our students and families. It is our belief that our Rangers need to demonstrate these throughout the campus to be successful scholars. When we have clear expectations for our scholars we are setting them up to achieve success at a greater rate.

Teachers have been here throughout the summer and weekends preparing their classrooms and collaborating with each other to design engaging lessons to challenge and prepare our Rangers. We ask for your partnership with us by ensuring that your child develops a strong attendance habit to maximize the instruction and learning. To further build this habit, we are partnering with PTO for our attendance BBQs for the classes with the best attendance throughout portions of the school year.

Our school provides various communication methods to partner with parents. Our office and teachers use websites that provide detailed information. Additionally, many teachers use Remind or Class Dojo for communication. Our school office utilizes Twitter, auto dialers and emails to help keep parents informed of the occurrences around school.

Each year, we feel that it is vital to review our school vision with our community.

David W. Long Elementary School staff believes that we are preparing our students to “Learn Today to Lead Tomorrow.” This helps to shape all that we do at David W. Long Elementary School and our vision for the school:

The staff of David W. Long Elementary is dedicated to work with families and the local community to foster a school climate that promotes collaboration in the development of a positive climate for our students. By structuring such a climate, our students will develop the necessary academic and social skills to contribute to our classrooms and society. The staff at David W. Long is committed to providing each child a superior education by ensuring engaging instruction and challenging learning experiences in a safe environment which encourages students to think logically, to learn cooperatively and independently, to respect and value diversity, and to develop a lifelong desire for learning that continues beyond the classroom walls. Our students will develop the necessary skills to be successful 21st century learners that will “Learn Today to Lead Tomorrow.”
