Dear Students and Families:

My name is Harvey Yurkovich and I am proud to be serving as your new principal of Delta Vista Middle School. I hope that all of you had a pleasant summer break and that you had some time for rest and relaxation. I am looking forward to an outstanding 2014-15 school year and want to welcome you on the return to school. Some of you who have had children come through Delta Vista Middle School a few years ago may remember me as the Vice Principal serving with Mr. Hetrick. I am very excited to return to DVMS as your principal. For those of you who are new to the Oakley Union Elementary School District or have students just entering middle school, let me formally introduce myself. I have been a part of the Oakley Union Elementary School District for 7 years serving as the vice principal at both Delta Vista and O’Hara Park schools. Prior to coming to Oakley Schools, I taught science at Edna Hill Middle School in Brentwood and also taught Special Education at the Liberty High School District. I have spent my entire life in the east county, growing up in Knightsen and attending local schools. My wife also serves as an educator in the Oakley Union Elementary School District and my daughter will be entering the 4th grade at the start of this school year. Having once served at Delta Vista I am truly excited about returning and working with our wonderful students, families, and members of our staff.

Each school year is an exciting time for all. Especially true in the middle school years, each grade level presents new opportunities and different challenges. Factors such as new classes, new friends, new teachers and higher expectations at the start of each school year brings a certain level of anticipation and wonder to our students, families and staff. Middle school is a time of a change in a child’s life. They are tasked with growing into students ready for high school in three short years. The workloads and social adjustments are greater here than at the elementary level. The campus is larger, there are more students, and your child will now have multiple teachers throughout the day. At the beginning of each school year, parents frequently ask questions about what they can do to support their child during the middle school years. Middle school can be challenging at times, but there are several simple things that will help students achieve success.

Parents, please take time to:

• Talk with your child about their school day. Ask them specific questions about their time at school. For example, “What was the most interesting thing you did in math class today?” or “Tell me about your science experiment?”
• Review your child’s grades on the Parent Portal. The Portal will give you relevant information regarding your child’s performance on their homework, a test or quiz as well as their attendance. Your interest and concern in their school progress will motivate them to do their best.
• Maintain contact with your child’s teachers and staff members to establish a successful home/school connection. All of our teachers have classroom websites with their contact information, homework assignments, and useful resources.

Students, here are some tips to help you get started with your transition:

• Make reminders and plan ahead.
• Use your school planner/agenda.
• Make time for homework and assignments.
• Check your grades frequently on the Portal.
• Break big projects into smaller ones.
• Prepare the night before.

Our goal is to challenge your student academically and assist them in growing socially and emotionally. We want them to become independent thinking, problem solving, young adults. Through the culture of our school and advisory program, your child will be encouraged to do their very best each day and likewise, expect the best results from their actions. We are looking forward to a great school year filled with engaging activities and positive learning experiences that will help your child throughout their entire life. Our school is strengthened by our partnerships with our families and community. I would like to encourage you to join our Delta Vista Middle School PTSA. With your support we can continue doing wonderful things on campus to benefit student engagement, learning, and community. By joining and becoming active in our DVMS - PTSA, you will have an even greater voice in forming our culture, student incentives and activities a school.

We are looking forward to a positive and fast paced school year at Delta Vista Middle School. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you this year and want to remind you that I have an open door policy. For any reason should you like to chat, please come in and see me. Take care and once again, Welcome to Delta Vista Middle School, home of the Panthers!

Best regards,
