THE HOME STRETCH
The school year is rapidly coming
to an end. We are down to less than three
weeks left in the year and this is the time we really need your help in keeping
students focused. There are a lot of
distractions at the end of the year and we all want to make sure that every
student finishes the year on a positive note.
Please help to ensure that your child makes it to school and please talk
to him/her about the importance of doing their best. Every year we end up having students that do
not get to participate in end of the year events due to behavior and I do not
want to see that happen to your child. A
solid effort and good choices is all that we ask over the last days of the
year. If you have any questions please
do not hesitate to contact us here at Delta Vista. Please take time to continue to look on our
website and ask your child how things are going. If you need any assistance please do not
hesitate to contact me @ (925) 625-6840 or ghetrick@ouesd.k12.ca.us
ATTENDANCE
School attendance will be
emphasized and monitored closely this year. We all know that there is no
educational equivalent to a student being in class. Every day that a student is not in class
valuable instruction is missed. You may
not realize that we have 5 fewer days of instruction this year and it makes it
that much more important for students to be in each and every class daily. Another important fact is that our school
district only receives revenue when students show up for school. Our District
and school budgets are based on projected numbers of students attending. If
students do not attend school, the school does not receive any money for them.
Broken down into a per-student per-day amount, each absence results in a loss
of about thirty dollars a day. In these tough economic times it is ever so
important that we do all that we can to allow for a quality education for all
students. I do realize that students get
sick and I do not want students to come to school if they are sick, but there
are times when students do not attend because they just do not feel well. Every
day is important and I would like to see all students in class as much as
possible. I want to encourage all of you
to try and plan as many things as possible around our school schedule, to help
ensure that your child is at school and does not miss out on educational
opportunities.
TRAFFIC
I think it can go without saying
that with more than 800 students getting out of school at the same time can
create somewhat of a traffic problem. I
want to continue to encourage everyone to be patient and follow the set traffic
patterns that are in place, and please watch for students in and around the
school at all times while you are driving.
Your attention while driving is greatly needed and I would ask that you
please try to refrain from talking on your cell phones and turn your radios
down to enable you to hear in case there is a potential problem. At dismissal, the only place where you may
turn left while on Frank Hengel Way is at the far
entrance to the school. Only the busses may turn left into the middle entrance
and the first driveway is actually an exit and not an entrance to Delta Vista
Middle School. While exiting the school, if you are turning
right on Cypress
please pull over to the right which will allow those
turning left to pass. In addition to
following the flow of traffic, please remember to not allow your child to cross
traffic to get into your vehicle. I
would also like to ask all parents to drop off students in the parent drop-off
and pick-up area only. This area is in front of the Library and Science wing. Please do
not drop off your students in the middle of the parking lot. If you have school business and pull into a
parking spot, that is fine; however, if you are not parking, please use the
drop-off area only.
WALKERS
For those of you whose children
walk to and from school please remind them to use all sidewalks and crosswalks,
and at no time should they cross over the railroad tracks or walk under the
overpass other than along the trail. In addition, student behavior on the way
to and from school is a reflection of their school, their families and their
community. Failure to exhibit good
behavior puts students in danger and could be grounds for receiving
consequences.
PRIORITIES
The number one priority for us
here at Delta Vista is to ensure that all of our students are safe, and feel
comfortable coming to school to learn each and every day. This priority is the responsibility of each
and everyone one of us. We all play an
important role. As the Principal of
Delta Vista, I truly believe that the education of children is a shared
responsibility between parents, students, school and community. When we work together, we make a difference.
