FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
How much homework should I expect my child to receive this year? Homework is a very important part of your child's education. Homework is assigned so that your child will have an opportunity to practice and reinforce what your child has learned in school as well as build good study habits. Your child will have homework generally every night except for Friday night. The amount of homework will vary from night to night. Generally, you can expect your child to spend 45 minutes to one hour on homework each night. With this said, I would like to say that I firmly believe students need to have time to spend with their family, play (build social interaction skills) and explore the world around them so sometimes his/her homework may be light. Your child will ALWAYS be asked to read and write every night as well as study his/her Jeopardy words. In addition, he/she will have spelling practice and math. The amount of time he/she spends on it will vary. In addition to daily homework, your child will have long-term projects (book projects, science, social studies), tests to study for, and current events due. Generally, homework is due the next day unless noted on your child's assignment sheet. One of my goals this year is to help your child continue to build great study habit and time management skills. Students should be encouraged to not turn any work in late. However, I know, sometimes things happen. If your child's work is turned in late, you should expect points to be deducted or the achievement grade to be lowered. Please remind your child that it is better to turn the work in LATE then not at all. By turning in the work, though late, it is evidence that he/she knew how to do the assigned work. What should my child do if he/she is absent? How much time to do the work? If your child is absent, he/she may go to the class website and see what was assigned. When your child returns to school, he/she should check in with me and make sure he/she understands what needs to be done. and copy the assignments into his/her assignment book. For every day your child is absent, he/she will have that many extra days to complete the missed assignments. For example: absent one day-will have one extra day absent two days- will have two extra days The Spelling program we will be using this year has four main components. First, we will be using the Rebecca Sitton Spelling Program which consists of 1200 high-use writing words in order of frequency of use in writing. Students will receive a list of the first 400 words. These words are called NO EXCUSE WORDS. This means students should spell all these words correctly all the time in their writing. Students will receive the next 200 words as part of their spelling program this year. There will be spelling homework and activities each week to help students learn the spelling for these words. There will not be a weekly test. Instead, students will be assessed through their daily writing assignments as well as through dictations and cloze activities. The second component of our spelling program will be introducing vocabulary (BIG WORDS) words from the curriculum. We will spend some time studying and using this words throughout the unit. Eventually, these words will be placed on the No Excuse Word list. Students who are still having difficulty spelling some of these words will then put the misspelled words on their Personal Spelling List.* The third component is called Word Study. This is where we will be learning how new words are created (using prefixes, suffixes, etc) and important spelling rules. The last component is where students will be individually creating a Personal Spelling list from the words they misspelled in their writing. This list will generally consist of 5-7 words. Students will be responsible for studying and taking the test on these words. When are Book Project assigned and due? Book Projects are usually assigned at the beginning of each month and due at the end of the month. Students will need to have selected a book by a given date. This date is usually a week after the book project has been introduced. Please remember the main purpose of Book Projects is to expose your child to a variety of genres. Current Events will be assigned every other week. Students will need to follow the format shared in class. There is a copy of the directions in your child's assignment book. What is a Reading Response Journal and Reading Log? The Reading Response Journal (RRJ) is where your child will record his/her thinking as he/she reads. It will also contain all the strategies taught throughout the year. As the year progressess, students will be asked to write in the RRJ once a week. This year your child will be asked to record his/her reading on a Reading Log. Your child should record everything he/she reads on it. This will help us see patterns in his/her reading as well as seeing his/her progress throughout the year. Class Norms are how we want to be treated and the norms are created by the class. At the beginning of the year, the class will discuss how to make our room a place where everyone feels safe, respected, cared for, and able to learn Through several class meeting, students will decide on what they feel should be the class norms. Since the class came up with the norms, they believe in the norms established and are more invested in them. Basically, they, the class, have told themselves how to behave, rather than being told how to behave. Every Friday a blue folder will come home with the following items: Class newsletter School newsletter Other pertinent information Child's work that has been graded/corrected/etc. Please carefully go through the information. Please sign the sheet in the folder and have your child return it to school on Monday. If you have any questions, please feel free to write me a note or send me an e-mail.
