What is my responsiblity, as the student, when I miss class?

Students must keep track of the days they miss and make up the work in a
timely manner. They accomplish this by updating their science
journal and planner using using a trusted friend or classmate. In addition,
they can check the handout table when they enter the room to pickup materials
that they don't yet have.
Absent students have as many days as their EXCUSED absences to make up the
work. Also, students should check the Calendar on this website and see what
it is that they missed, so that they don't come to class asking the teacher,
"What did I miss?" Absent students will be expected to have a general
understanding of what's going on in class upon their return.

What is Mr. Weitz's responsiblity, as the teacher, when I miss class?

Mr. Weitz will help the student keep track of the days they miss and make up
the work in a timely manner.
In addition, Mr. Weitz will also leave the week's handouts on the table for
the student to pick up. It is also Mr. Weitz's responsibility to update this
website's calendar and PowerSchool grades with appropriate "zero" for missing
work as soon as possible.

What does it mean to be tardy in Mr. Weitz's class?

The first minute of the class is for students to get on task, which means
picking up any handouts, being seated and starting their journals.
So, in my class, a tardy means that a student is NOT in the classroom BY the
tardy bell. A student will also be considered tardy if she/he is NOT in their
seat AND on task within one minute after the tardy bell.
Tardies will result in the loss of citizenship points and after the third
tardy, parents will be notified.

Can I turn in late work?

Students in 8th grade science cannot turn in late work for credit, unless
their are granted more time on assignments as part of an IEP or 504 education
plan.
In general, late work will not be accepted. However, because life happens,
students or parents can request an extension via email, note, or phone call
before, or on, the assignment due date. Then the student will turn in an
extension request form instead of the assignment itself. The purpose is to
promote communication between the student and the teacher when there is confusion
about the assignment or time constraints, as well as to simply the grading
process.
Of course, students who have excused absences will be given as many days as
they were absent to turn in the work without penalty.

When can I talk to Mr. Weitz about classroom, grade, or assignment issues?

On most days, the best time to discuss issues with Mr. Weitz is 30 minutes
before school starts, or right after school. However, brunch and lunch are
also appropriate times to talk with Mr. Weitz if he is in his room.
DO NOT PLAN ON DISCUSSING IMPORTANT ISSUES IMMEDIATELY BEFORE YOUR SCIENCE CLASS.
