 Essay assignment – Choose a position regarding any social issue in The Bluest Eye.  View the links on my website to gain some insights and inspiration for a topic. Incorporate quotes from the text and from at least three other sources. A works cited page will be required, so keep track of the origins for all sources.

Be sure to incorporate some of the language of argumentation as per The Elements of Reasoning in your essay.

                        ethos, logos, and pathos (10);

                  topoi/topos (23);

                  enthymeme, deduction (37);

                  induction, example, deduction (26);

                  claim, support, example, induction (32);

                  premise (41);

                  datum, support, claim, warrant, backing, qualifier, rebuttal (44);

                  forensic, epideictic, deliberative (45).

                  types of conjecture – observations, expressions and narratives (56-64)

                  kronos / kairos (65)

                              You may also wish to incorporate some terms from Chapter 4:

                                          logotropic (71)

                                          neologisms (72)

                                          stipulative definitions (72)

                                          etymology (74)

                                          synonym (74)

                                          classification (76)

                                          the negative (78)

                                          metaphor and simile (78)

Your thesis (the last sentence of your introduction) will establish your argument and must contain some sense of judgment on your part.  Consider the underlying social commentary Morrison makes regarding an issue of interest. Your essay could comment on her interpretation of gender roles, family structure, racism, sexism, identity crisis, cultural ramifications of oppression.  Read links on my site and more to consider some options. Agree or disagree with her world view as depicted in her story.   Email me if you have a thesis idea that you are unsure about.

Ultimately, you will create a 750 word essay (about three typed pages) in MLA format.
