I started teaching junior high music in 1991 and moved to the Eureka Union School District in 1995,
where I continue to teach 5th and 6th grade band, 4-6 boys choir, and junior high band and choir. I
earned my Bachelors of Music degree in Flute Performance and Voice from CSU Sacramento and my
Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Leslie College in Massachusetts. I also teach at the Donner
Mine Summer Music Camp and I perform as a percussionist with the Sierra Nevada Wind Ensemble. My
other passions include running, triathlons, and gardening.
The study of music is an important part of a complete education. It engages students in individual and
group activity, develops creativity, problem solving, and critical and evaluative skills, and provides a link
into our cultural heritage. Our Eureka Union Music program is concerned with maintaining and
advancing school music for all students and encourages support of quality music education. Our
comprehensive program, beginning in fifth grade and culminating with High School, incorporates all
aspects of music education. A child who commits themselves to the entire program will leave with a
greater understanding of music and the proficiency to appreciate and enjoy his or her musical
instrument. Within this scope they will also be able to have a stronger understanding of community and
a greater sense of accomplishment and achievement.
