Message from the Principal

We are halfway through the year already! It is so hard to believe. It seems like just yesterday that we had the first day of school. This is an exciting year in education. We are about to embark on a new voyage into the world of Common Core State Standards. The new standards are not more difficult than the previous ones, but the big change is that the students will experience more hands-on math problems and explorations, all the standards have been made more relevant to real-life situations, and all students will be more prepared to advance on to colleges and/or trade schools.
School districts in California are also receiving some of our funding through what is now called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). This is eliminating many small categories of funding, and releasing that funding in lump sums that can be locally controlled by each district. In order to receive and expend these funds we have to have a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) in place that will address how we are serving our students, what programs are currently in place, what we can be doing better, and what might we like to add to our existing curriculum to enhance our students' educations in the future.
Our staff is currently working on the beginning phase of this plan, and we will be bringing it to parents and community in late February and March for feedback and input. The plan will include all of the above plus how we propose spending the LCFF funding.
In addition we are also going to be studying and evaluating new math curricula that have been developed to fit the new Common Core State Standards. We will keep you updated on our progress in that area.
And last, but certainly not least, all California public schools will be piloting the new online testing that is replacing the old STAR testing. This spring we will be testing between April 14 and May 22. All 3rd through 8th grade students will be testing using our new chromebooks. 2nd graders will not be included in this new testing regiment, but instead will be continually assessed throughout the year by their classroom teacher in each subject area.
The new testing program is very different from what the students have been doing in the past twenty-five or more years. If you have a computer at home, and have online capability, we strongly encourage you to google "sbac practice test" and see for yourself what your student will be doing. Going online at home would also greatly benefit your student by giving them extra practice time. I would also encourage your student to practice taking the test two grade levels below their current standing (except for 3rd graders - nothing below 3rd grade is available) to start with, and then work their way up.
In March we are planning, in conjunction with the Family Resource Center, to have a Family Night Dinner, at which time we can actually sit together and discuss the new state standards, the new funding formula, and look at the plan so far. It will provide you with a great opportunity to ask questions and give us valuable feedback and input. Watch for information coming home, and on this website, at the end of February about this event and many others.
