Welcome to the Fieldbrook Website

Fieldbrook School has been named a California Distinguished School for 2014! The staff, students and families work hard to make this the best little school district ANYWHERE! Come visit our school and see for yourself why Fieldbrook is so very deserving of this award. We were eligible to apply based upon the students' outstanding test scores in the spring of 2013. In the application we stressed two positive 'strands': The Common Thread, which is Fieldbrook's overall family atmosphere and the pervasive feeling that no one gets left behind, and the great Student Study Team and intervention program.

For those parents of 5th through 8th graders who want to participate in basketball season for for boys and girls, the state of California now requires every elementary school student athlete to have a sports physical. Of course, you are free to go to your own doctor or any of the community clinics to have these physicals done, but we are also being offered the opportunity to go to Redwood Urgent Care at 2440 23rd St., in Eureka. The cost of the physical is $50 (the standard fee), but Redwood Urgent Care is going to donate all of the money back to the Fieldbrook School sports fund at the end of August. They will be offering the sports physicals for the entire month of August, seven days a week, from 9:30 to 6:00, on a walk-in basis - no appointment necessary. I will be mailing out a letter with the same information and a copy of the forms that need to be completed for the physicals. If you choose to go to Redwood Urgent Care to have your athlete's physical done, just be sure and mention that you are from Fieldbrook School. They will also do the physicals for youth football and cheerleading for Fieldbrook families.
This next school year we will be splitting the 4th and 7th grades. We will be having 3rd/4th, 4th/5th, 6th/7th and 7th/8th grade combination classrooms. Because we are such a small school we are unable to accommodate parent requests, just rest assured that the 4th and 7th graders will have opportunities to interact with all of their grade level peers throughout the day. The 4th graders will be with Mrs. Kadle all morning, from 8:30 to 12:30, receiving their core instruction in English Language Arts and math. The 7th graders will be with Mrs. Miller for math every day.
When we split grade levels we create two independent pods of students, balancing out boy/girl ratios, high/average academic capabilities, any behavior issues and special needs, thus creating, in essence, two small classrooms of students, then place the groups with the teachers. We never just take the higher achieving students and place them in the higher classroom, just like we never take the struggling students and place them all in one classroom. Healthy split level classrooms are very rewarding for all students.
In a small school like ours we cannot avoid split classrooms when the numbers of students vary from year to year, and some classes are just simply bigger than others. Many students will have the same teacher for two, even sometimes three years, but the amazing thing about Fieldbrook teachers is the way they vary their curricula and presentations. They do not teach the same subject the same way year after year! Our teachers vary their units, the novels they incorporate, and the projects they do from year to year. This is what good teachers do, and this is what we have at Fieldbrook School!
The 2016-2017 school year will bring new English Language Arts curriculum to our school. This year we are piloting the new National Geographic 'Reach for Reading' program in Kindergarten through sixth grades. We are currently working on making a decision on the pilot program for 7th/8th grades. It will be an exciting year. The teachers will all be attending training on these new programs before school starts.
This year our school lunches will be provided by the Arcata School District, and will be prepared in the kitchen at Sunny Brae Middle School. We will pick them up and transport them here. An exciting addition will be a fresh salad bar. Please note that the cost of school lunch will increase to $3.50.
Looking forward to seeing all of you on Monday, August 29th!!!
