The school year is almost over! Where has the time gone? Well, we have been teaching, guiding, nurturing, counseling, cajoling, praising, and totally enjoying the opportunity to work with your kids! It has been an amazing year, being topped off with the California Distinguished School Award for 2014. We were eligible to apply based upon the students' outstanding test scores in the spring of 2013. In the application we selected two 'signature practices' that we felt contributed to making our school such a success. One 'signature practice' was what we named "The Common Thread"; the practice of teaching the whole child, nurturing every student at our school, supporting families as needs arise, and celebrating our students on a regular basis. This practice is so successful because we have parents, and a whole community, who really and truly put the kids first! The second 'signature practice' was our Student Study Team process that we have in place to make sure that no student falls through a hole academically. At the first sign of difficulties the classroom teacher nominates the student for a Student Study Team meeting. We meet with staff and parents to look at data, and form a plan that will best meet that student's needs. Through this practice we provide extra academic support by way of our Intervention Program.
Fieldbrook School's staff is the most amazing, professional and motivated group of people I have had the honor to work with in 36 years in education. Sadly, we will be having three wonderful people retire at the end of this year. Doyle McLain will be leaving us; however, he will return a few hours a week to keep our technology program running smoothly. Who will the kids bring cookies for? How will one person ever be able to replace "the man who does it all"? Mr. Bill Donovan will also be retiring! What will we do without Mr. Bill? It will be very difficult, but, Dave Johnson, who works with Mr. Bill now will take over those duties. And last, but far from least, Suzanne Wildey will be departing from Fieldbrook School. What a phenomenal lady she is! She puts in endless hours on her own time, always has a kind smile and a positive word, and in addition to be being a classroom aid she has been our volunteer librarian. Mrs. Wildey, upon retirement, will be moving to Oregon to be near family. We will miss all three of these great people!
We have hired a very nice man named Martin Tunzi to take over for Doyle. He will actually be working with Doyle a few hours every day beginning Monday, May 5th! Introduce yourself when you see him around campus.
We have completed the draft for our Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), and we will have it available for parents, community and stakeholders to review and provide any additional feedback or suggestions on Tuesday, May 6th, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. Please plan on joining us. On Tuesday, June 17th, at the regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting, there will time set aside for public hearings on the LCAP and our budget for next year.
