Mr. McKim tries to teach the enormous complexity and beautiful patterns of
the natural world to 7th and 8th graders. This is his 20th year of trying.
He's lived in Davis for 24 years, was schooled at UCD from 1984 to 1990.
Enough professors thought he deserved two degrees: one degree in biology and
another in art (painting, drawing, sculpting). He received a teaching
credential in physical science, life science and art. He commuted to teach
full-time science and part-time yearbook in Vacaville for 11 years, then
taught science and built a plant-growing and storage patio at Holmes for 3
years. Now he's at Harper - for good! He's a family guy and very serious
about good behavior. Teammates say he does well during his adult softball
games, wields a garden shovel with some dexterity, and has been called upon
by neighbors to help with landscaping and animal control. He's an AYSO soccer
coach and helps with Little League coaching (only possible because of
tremendous help from his wife) His adventurous palate tends toward the
strong, sweet, and savory: Jamba Juice smoothies, black licorice, sour
cherry pie, peppers, PBJ's, peanut M&M's, Fuzio's firecracker fusili,
Good 'n' Plenty.
Listen well the first time. Make friends - it's never a good idea to share
dangerous lab materials with an enemy. Observe carefully. Look for
patterns. Science can be used to solve problems of all kinds: academic,
behavioral, social. Do not "check out" during class. Accept failures and
learn from them. Don't let your shyness or attitude hinder your progress.
Learn humility and ask questions even if you think they are stupid or make
you look stupid. Avoid becoming an ignoramus. Develop great study habits!
