Spectra Art![]() SPECTRA Art is the art program for all K-5th Grades Garden Gate students. SPECTRA is an acronym for Special Teacher Resources For Art. The lesson plans are aligned with the California Department of Eucation content standards for the visual arts. Through the SPECTRA Art Program, students
Each art class is taught on a biweekly basis, allowing for 15 or 16 art lessons per classroom each school year. The SPECTRA Art Program is currently coordinated by Poonam Chhabra. Please feel free to contact her at poonam.art@gmail.com. Any teacher or parent wishing to review the curriculum of the SPECTRA Art program can look at the SPECTRA Art lesson books housed in the bookshelves in the Art Room. Parent volunteers teach the art classes using the SPECTRA Art curriculum. During the first few weeks of school, classroom teachers recruit one or two parent volunteers to teach art for their child's class. A pool of parent volunteers has developed as more parents have become involved in the program and teach art year after year. Some dedicated parents even volunteer to teach art for classrooms in which their own child is not a student.
Parent volunteers are not required to have art or teaching experience. The SPECTRA Art Coordinator provides an orientation and ongoing training for new volunteers. The SPECTRA Art curriculum provides complete lesson plans, giving the parent volunteers all the information necessary to teach a high-quality lesson. All materials and supplies are purchased and organized by the SPECTRA Art Coordinator and paid for by the PTA.
Classroom teachers accompany their students to art class and help manage classroom behavior. Although the art class is led by parent volunteers, classroom teachers are expected to remain in the Art Room throughout the lesson.
