Celebrating Learning

Proud of the Past
Rising into the Future

The staff at Gehringer Elementary School welcomes you and your family to the 2014-2015 School Year. We are committed to doing all we can to make this school year a successful experience for every student. We firmly believe that a home/school partnership is necessary for the success of all of our students. Learning is not an easy process! It involves sharing ideas, making mistakes, and attempting new experiences. Learning involves hard work by everyone, the teacher, the parent, the principal, but most importantly the student.

At Gehringer, we value and challenge each student and provide opportunities for success. Instruction is based on the new Common Core Standards which are being implemented across the United States. These standards will support students in becoming college and career ready. They emphasize reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational. In addition, math standards emphasize conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with equal intensity. We are excited to these changes to education which will help prepare our students for the future.

Our school prides itself in the respectful environment that it provides for our students. We continue to teach essential life skills to help students become successful in life; Caring, Cooperation, Courage, Effort, Initiative, Integrity, Perseverance, Responsibility, and Respect. As a “Caring School Community” we value having our parents and community members be a part of our school.

Research and experience shows us that a parent’s/guardian’s involvement in a child’s education is directly related to his/her success in school. To maximize your child’s success, emphasize the importance of education through the following:

• Ensure that your child is at school on time each day.
• Attend parent/teacher conferences and school events.
• Monitor your child’s homework daily.
• Expect and support positive behavior at school.
• Read with your child or encourage your child to read daily.

In addition, there are numerous volunteer opportunities in which we welcome you to become involved. Volunteers make a tremendous positive impact and enrich our educational program. More information regarding volunteering at Gehringer can be found in this handbook. Your child’s teacher and our PTA will also provide information. Please consider supporting our school in this way.

I look forward to partnering with you to make this an exciting and successful year for our students. Thank you in advance for your support and commitment. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (925) 625-7070 or

Safety First for All Children

The Oakley School District is committed to providing a safe environment for all children at school and at home. We have had no reports of firearms on any of our campuses and much of the credit must go to you the parents. One of the easiest ways to prevent an accidental shooting at home or school is to make sure all firearms are properly stored. It is not only the logical, common sense thing to do, but it is now the law. California law holds that an adult may be held criminally liable if a firearm is improperly stored.
