Each month a poetry or other special speaking project is required. The goals of this assignment are:

**To memorize and recite a poem and/or present to an assigned topic

**To master public speaking skills and build self confidence

**Appreciate poetry as a literary genre

How to Eat a Poem

Don't be polite.
Bite in.
Pick it up with your fingers and lick the juice that
may run down your chin.
It is ready and ripe now, whenever you are.
You do not need a knife or fork or spoon
or plate or napkin or tablecloth.

For there is no core
or stem
or rind
or pit
or seed
or skin
to throw away.

Requirements for special speaking projects:

 

**Directions will be sent home at the beginning of each month with the specific topic.

      

 

**Plan ahead and prepare for your presentation. Practice in front of an audience at home.It will help you become more at ease with presenting!

 

**Recite the poem or presentation to your classmates on assigned due date. Students will be given speaking grades for all oral presentations throughout the year.
