May Newsletter May 1st – May 30th Well, can you believe we are already into our last month of school? My how time flies when you’re having fun! Your children have come so far and learned so much. I am very proud of them and happy to have been their teacher this year. :) This school year has flown by and I have enjoyed every minute of it! Don’t quit on them now though. During this last month we will be doing an ocean life unit and working on our kindergarten yearbooks. Continue to work with them through this last month and revel in their accomplishments! READING: We will continue reading and writing long vowel words as well as short vowel words. We will also continue writing small sentences; using correct capitalization and punctuation and discussing further the components of a paragraph and story writing. They have learned punctuation. They can name most of them for you and give you “their” jobs. They also know nouns and verbs. They will know the difference between a noun and a proper noun! Your child should be able to construct 3 sentences that are relative to each other. We will focus on writing sentences with first, next, and last! We will also be furthering our reading process and working on becoming more fluent readers. Last week we started “Daily Language Reviews” to better prepare them for first grade. The packet will be sent home on Fridays. Your child will complete the work in pencil first. They will self correct the paper in orange or red pencil. :) In addition to their Rainbow Words, we have been concentrating on the following words: what, why, could, they, went, want, mother, father, and give. These words they will be seeing quite frequently when I test their reading levels at the end of the year. This is just a suggestion to review the words at home. The “want” and the “went” are extremely challenging for them. We will be concluding our chapter reading book Dolphin Tale this week. We will be starting our last chapter book Tangled. Of course we will be watching our movie after we complete the book. MATH: We will continue number recognition 1-100, as well as handwriting numbers 1-100. We will review time (to the hour) and money (penny, nickel, dime, quarter) and continue working on both. Your child will be working further on addition and subtraction as the end of the year approaches, as well as reviewing measurements and determining weight. They will also start the “Daily Math Review” to better prepare them for first grade. The packet will be sent home on Fridays. Your child will complete the work in pencil first. They will self correct the paper in orange or red pencil. :) BIBLE: This month will be looking back at all the major characters we have studied in the Bible. We will review our previous memory verses as well and be practicing some of them for our upcoming graduation. Remember to bring your chapel offering on Tuesdays. Thank you for teaching them to give. :) I would also like to apologize for me missing our chapel. ART: We are going to be creating several different things dealing with spring and the end of the year. We will also start an ocean life unit and create art related to that. We will continue working in our Draw and Write books, further developing their handwriting and drawing skills. SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: In our science unit we will return to focusing on health and nutrition. We will start the month with a booklet entitled “Building a Healthy Me!” They will look at different food groups, how food affects their bodies and the right choices to make in choosing food. We will also discuss how our bodies work, both internally and externally. In regards to social studies, we will be looking at the upcoming holidays: Memorial Day and the 4th of July, as well as what our country stands for. We have 1 more student providing snack for their assigned week. If you have not contributed one additional snack yet, please do so. As of May 14th, no child will be assigned snacks for the week. We are requesting each student bring in a snack to enable us to have enough snacks for the end of the year. If you already donated, thank you so much for your generosity! :) SPECIAL REMINDERS and UPCOMING EVENTS: • May 1st - Kindergarten graduation pictures at 9:00 a.m. • May 11th- Volunteer thank you, drive-thru breakfast • May 18th – Chuck E.
