Welcome Grapeland Families!

Hello Grapeland Families! I want to extend my most sincere welcome to all of our Grizzlies. The excitement for this new school year is already building, and we promise to deliver another GREAT year of growth and learning. Our school staff and all of our parents certainly deserve the praise for making our vision a reality each year. Your Grapeland PTA is geared up to support our staff and students no matter what it takes!

We are very excited to offer both CLOUDS pre-school and Kindergarten programs at Grapeland. Orientation for all of our TK/Kindergarten students will be on Friday, August 4th at 9:00 a.m. and the preschool orientation will be held at 1:00 PM later that day. Attending orientation is beneficial. You will receive detailed information and have all of your questions and concerns answered prior to the first day of school and kinder bags will be on sale this day. All pre-school, TK and Kinder class placements will be posted online at 4:00 p.m. July 31st. Our start time for morning CLOUDS preschool is from 7:45 to 10:45; afternoon preschool will run from 11:05- 2:05 PM. Kindergarten classes will be 8:00 AM and dismissal will be at 11:20 AM. Our afternoon TK and Kindergarten classes will begin at 11:25 and dismiss at 2:45 each day including all Mondays.

This year, school begins on Monday, August 7th at 8:15 a.m. This is a minimum day and school will dismiss at 1:15 p.m. Back to School Night is in the evening, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Every Monday will be a minimum day and school will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. except for pre-school/TK and Kinder. Regular dismissal time, Tuesday through Friday, is 2:45 p.m. To help alleviate the congestion associated with the first week of school I am encouraging all parents to leave the car at home or park at an off-campus location and then walk to school. Third through fifth grade students who ride their bike to school must wear a helmet and lock their bike in the racks during the school day. Students younger than third grade may ride their bike to school once we have had a family/principal meeting.

During the first week of school your child will bring home additional school information and specific classroom information from your child’s teacher.

Drop-off Procedures and Times -- When school begins on Monday, August 7th, students should arrive at school no earlier than 7:45 a.m. unless part of CLOUDS. Our new preschool program will require parents of preschoolers to temporarily park in the new designated “parking zone” along the loop to check their children in and out each day. These times should not affect the drop-off/pick up times for the other grade levels but please exercise patience. Each morning at 7:45 a.m. we will open the gate north of the office building. Students may proceed directly to the hard courts at this time. At 8:13 a.m. when the school bell rings, students should find their classroom number painted on the hard court concrete and wait there until their teacher arrives. On the first day of school, teachers will be holding signs indicating their name and room number. Parents are welcome to come on to campus in the morning with their student(s). We ask that once the teacher has walked the students to their classroom, that you say “goodbye” so that teachers may begin their day.

PTA Meet and Greet – Make time on your calendar for this one! On the first day of school, right after the teachers have taken the children to their classrooms, all parents are invited to the MPR for our annual Meet and Greet. Our PTA would like to welcome you with coffee and other goodies at 8:25 a.m. You can meet our new and returning PTA officers and learn how to get involved in your child’s school.

Student Safety during Drop-off and Pick-up – Safety is always our first concern and we MUST work together to ensure safe passage. The yellow curb immediately in front of the school is the ONLY place students may exit your vehicle. School employees will guide you each morning and afternoon to assist you at these very busy and congested times of the day. Continue to move forward along the yellow curb until the line of cars has come to a complete stop before allowing your child to exit or enter your car. The school parking lot and the curb along Etiwanda Avenue are NOT safe or appropriate places to allow students to exit your car. Additionally, the red curb in the drop-off area is a “no stopping” zone. Please allow for some extra time and bring your patience during this typically high traffic, and high student density time. NOTE – the circle loop will be blocked off and is not a location for student drop-off or pick-up; however, it may be open for school events—Awards assemblies, etc.

Student Lunches – We provide our students with an air conditioned/heated cafeteria to sit in and enjoy their lunches. A student meal costs $2.75 daily and can be pre-paid. You will receive more information on pre-paying in your first day packets. Students are required to stay at the cafeteria table for the first 15 minutes of their 40 minute lunch break. This is done in an effort to encourage students to eat their lunch. It is each student’s responsibility to clean his/her eating area and put their waste in the trashcans. Lunch schedule: first grade 11:30; second grade 11:45; third grade 12:00; fourth grade 12:10; and fifth grade 12:30.

Student Placement and Schedules -- Student classroom assignments will be posted on-line on Thursday, August 3rd at 4:00 p.m. for grades 1 through 5 and Monday July 31st for PS/TK/K. To see your child’s schedule online, go to and follow the parent link.

New Students – On Friday, August 4th the campus gates will be open from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Although teachers will not be on campus, you can locate your new classroom and find your class number painted on the hard courts where you will meet your teacher each morning.

Fundraiser Kick-off – Our annual fundraiser will begin Friday, August 18th. Your child will receive a fundraising packet and all of the needed information. The success of this fundraiser is very important in order to continue many of our PTA sponsored programs. Thank you for supporting these efforts!

Birthday Book Club – This has been a very popular program at Grapeland. We will again offer our Birthday Book Club this year. Your child’s special day can be remembered forever with the dedication of a library book with a special name plate placed on the inside cover. Look for more information in the first day packet of information.

Back-to-School – This year Back-to-School night is scheduled for Monday, August 7th. Classes will be open from 5:50 – 7:00 PM Each teacher will give two thirty minute presentations for those parents with multiple students at Grapeland. A detailed flyer will come home with your child on the first day of school. CLOUDS/TK/Kindergarten will not hold a formal presentation. Please attend the orientation on Friday, August 4th beginning at 9:00 a.m. (TK/K) and 1:00 PM for CLOUDS pre-school.

Student Dress Code - Please become familiar with the dress code of the Etiwanda School District before purchasing new clothes for your child to wear to school. The complete dress code is available on the Etiwanda home page at the following address: Many times students will encourage parents to buy clothing that is popular rather than clothing that is appropriate for an elementary child. You can never go wrong with your child’s clothing if you purchase clothes that are more conservative than fashionable. During the first week of school I will be meeting with all students to answer any questions that they might have about the dress code policy.

As always, I hope that the above information is helpful in preparing for this school year. I am certain we are going to have another GREAT Grizzly Year! We look forward to seeing you on August 7th.

We are excited for 2017-18!
