Uploading the Latest News to all Grizzly Families!

Dear Families of Grapeland Elementary!

It is hard to believe that we are in the midst of the third trimester! We continue to move forward this year in supporting all students with high quality instruction while implementing ways to develop social skills needed to becoming college and career ready. Our i-Ready diagnostics from December in math and reading have proven we are well on our way to reaching our achievement targets in grades K-5. Students continue to read, read and read some more. Nearly 450 students made their personal AR goals this past session. Amazing! In addition, we have begun another round of E3 after school enrichment classes, implemented our Multiplication Jedi Master program during lunch, and are continuing with our high quality offerings.

Our PTA-sponsored music teacher, Mrs. Ibay continues to enrich our students with wonderful musical arts experiences. Mr. Jackson comes down each week from EIS to lead the fifth graders in our band program. Our PE time on Tuesdays and Thursdays continues to be a “win-win” allowing students to exercise with Mr. Barnett and his quality team while giving our teachers valuable time to collaborate to improve instructional practices and plan meaningful common core-aligned lessons. We are planning a parent PE night to share the great many activities your child participates in during the PE instructional days, so look for that outdoor event in spring when we have more daylight in the evenings.

Report cards come home 2/19 and you are invited to celebrate student achievement in academics and student citizenship efforts for the second trimester on Thursday, (3/3). See our website or contact your child’s teacher for the awards assembly times specific to your child. This is always a highlight for our students and staff!

Our site leadership and PTA are busy planning fun spring time events. We have scheduled a few fun and informative events on 3/1. Our Watch Dogs Donuts with Dads begins at 7:45 AM followed by a Coffee with the Principal event at 8:30 AM. Both events will be held in our MPR. Please join us for a joint meeting with PTA as both organizations provide updates and volunteer information that support our students. Please calendar the Sweetheart Dance scheduled for (2/19) at EIS, an AR Sundae Celebration, (3/10), and our PTA Walk-a-Thon event, (3/11)—all scheduled before Spring break. In April, our superintendent invites you to enjoy coffee and refreshments while reviewing district-wide progress on LCAP goals. Childcare will be provided. This event will take place in the morning at EIS, (4/6).

In addition to the i-Ready diagnostic tests, the SBAC summative assessments will be administered after Spring break in late March, 3/28 and run through the end of April early May. These assessments which measure year-end standard mastery in language arts and math are part of the state’s testing system, CAASPP. Fifth grade will continue to take the CST/CMA Science test this year as well.

I appreciate all our parents do for our school community. Grapeland continues to deliver excellence in education, and I am so thankful for caring and supporting parents. I continue to be amazed by the competent and caring staff and very thankful for a proactive and professional PTA. It is a true joy serving alongside all of you to provide the best for our students. Have a safe and enjoyable spring!

Happy New Year!

Dear Grapeland Families,

One of our focus areas this school year is instilling in students the importance of giving back, showing empathy in small ways to give a glimmer of hope for those less fortunate. As we enter into 2016, our leadership continues to look for more ways to get our community involved in these endeavors. One example is through supporting our efforts to provide over 250 meals to local families in need. This is truly an act of collective kindness, a life lesson for our families and especially our young students. Our November Box of Love campaign was a huge success, exceeding our expectations and reflecting once again the hearts of our Grapeland families. Thank you! Take special care of those around you and I encourage you to set new goals to support those who have needs around you. Best wishes to you and your loved ones as we move forward into a prosperous new year!

Mr. Shaw
