Uploading the Latest News to all Grizzly Families!

Dear Grapeland Families!

We are off to a great start! Students are in classes and we have systems in place to support our young grizzlies with a variety of academic opportunities and positive behavior! All students in grades one through five have chromebooks and teachers are planning engaging lessons to support their academic needs using the latest in technology to enrich learning experiences. Our district has planned days for professional development to build teacher capacity in meeting the demands of the new common core standards and assessments systems. Needless to say, we are powered up and energized for what this year has in store!

In addition to planning a solid academic program at Grapeland we have also developed a plan for supporting positive behavior on campus. Our team which is made of teachers, support staff and parents has decided on three focus areas with the end goal of helping our students with managing their own behavior. We will be teaching social skills, utilizing a referral system to help identify and support students, and teaching universal expectations. We have developed an anti-bullying program with the help of PBS's Joel Greene from Curiosity Quest. He visited Grapeland one Friday morning and has challenged our students to "Be the Difference!" in attacking bully-type behavior. Students signed pledges and committed to stand up against bully behavior and its negative effects. Joel identified the major types of bully-type behavior, role played with our students, and reinforced our site's plan to address anti-social behavior in all contexts on campus. This program helps us communicate and sustain a positive educational environment that is SAFE, RESPECTFUL and RESPONISBLE… our three main Grapeland rules.

Our social skills for the first trimester which will be explicitly taught school wide and in context are: listening, disagreeing appropriately, accepting criticism, following directions, and respectful ways to have a conversation. Here is an example of what we teach our students about “listening, our first social skill of focus:

1. Look at the person
2. Be quiet and pay close attention
3. Wait until the person is finished speaking
4. Show you heard by nodding your head or saying “Okay.”

One way to support these at home is to take the time as parents/guardians to teach each skill when the opportunity arises. Your family will appreciate your efforts and your kids will be better off for it. The hope is that these social skills transfer to everyday interactions with others! Thank you for partnering with us.

Finally, I cannot state enough the gratitude and appreciation for our families in supporting Grapeland’s fund-raising efforts. Your contribution, whether purchasing cheesecakes and desserts or contributing monetary means to our site, helps tremendously in meeting our site’s goals of support mentioned above. Further, it gives us all a sense of community when we can all work together for a common purpose—a very important one—supporting our Grapeland children.

As you can see, we are excited to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Your children could not be in a better place. Thanks again for partnering with us this year--we have so much in store for all!

Let's Power up...Together!

Parents, teachers, support staff, and community members, each have an important role in encouraging and inspiring our children to become active, life-long learners equipped for the 21st century. To this end, it is my sincere desire to provide expanded opportunities for our students to acquire the necessary skills to become productive citizens both locally and globally. Our children deserve the very best support in this ever-changing world, and we all have the privilege to be part of making this happen. These are exciting times!

Thank you for supporting our PTA with your time and membership! I encourage you all to join and volunteer. There are many opportunities to get involved, both small and large, and your support is one of the best ways to serve our students directly. We have opportunities in the mornings with our walking program and Watch Dogs. You are invited to attend our Watch Dog/Moms Pizza dinner kick-off on September 2 at EIS. It will start at 6:00 PM.
