Dear Parents, This last week you probably received your child’s CogAt test scores in the mail, or will be receiving them soon. We have had many questions this year from parents about the scores, as the scores were lower than in previous years. As a second grade team, we called the district office to get some clarification. Since we have received so many questions this year, we wanted to share with you what we have learned. This year, the CogAt test was a new version. In addition, the CogAt test this year was graded (or “normed”) differently than it has been in the past. In the past, the score was “normed” based on all second graders in the country. So if your child scored in the 50 percentile in a subject, then his/her score was “average” with all second graders in the country. However, this year, the CogAt results are based on local norms. This means that your child was only compared to other second graders within this district. Since we have a very high performing district, this means that the scores may be signicantly lower. In order to qualify for the GATE program, a child must have an composite score in the 97, 98, or 99 percentile based on the local district norms. The district has forwarded us your child’s locally normed scores. They have also given us your child’s scores based on “national norms”. If you are curious about what those scores are you may come to us privately (not around your child) and we will share them with you. However, please understand that the GATE program is using the local norms and the not the national norms for qualification purposes. We hope that this letter can clarify some of your questions and concerns. Thank you.The Second Grade Team

We have completed the STAR test! The students did a great job and we are so proud of them! They all worked really hard, but we know they are glad to be finished. We have been working on a lot of projects for Open House which has been very fun and relaxing for the students. Open House will be on Wednesday, May 16th.
Thanks to the parents who donated snacks for the STAR testing days. The students really enjoyed them and looked forward to the snacks on the testing days.
Remember all 2nd graders will be turning in their book report next Monday, May 14th. On May 14th, they will be getting a new homework packet which will be due Monday, May 21st.
We do have library this week, so be sure your student turns in their library books.
Thanks so much!

The information for the book report, along with the materials, will be coming home in your child's homework folder today. The only thing that is missing is the black report cover that your child will put his completed book report in. It has not come in from Office Depot yet, but when it comes I will send it home with your child. It looks like most students will be able to use their 1st book choice for their book report. We were just worried about students doing the same book. If your child picked a non-fiction book, I had them choose another book because I think it would be too hard to come up with another story ending for the non-fiction book. Please let me know if you have any questions! Thanks. I think they are going to turn out great!
PS - I am going to hang the dioramas on the wall for Open House, so please try not to make the shoeboxes too big or too heavy! Thanks so much!

We will be doing an exciting book report project in lieu of the weekly homework for the 2 weeks that we will be taking the STAR test. The book report project will be a diorama along with book report. A blue piece of paper will be coming home in your child's everyday folder tomorrow (Thursday) that will explain a little bit more about the project and will help your child with their book selection. Please help your child fill out the form and return it to class no later than Monday, April 23rd. Specific information about this project will be sent home next Monday, April 23rd in their homework folder. Please let us know if you have any questions. Thanks!Mrs. Parlett and Mrs. Selover_______________________________________________________________________________________________April 17, 2012We just wanted to tell you that the math pages for this week's homework packet are not from the black workbook. The math pages are in the packet already. There are tiny page numbers on the bottom of the math pages in the packet that will correlate with the directions. We apologize for any confusion! We told the students about it this morning and it sounded like a lot of them were confused. They were relieved when they heard the news because they said they were so confused! =) Thanks so much. Please let us know if you have any other questions!
April 26, 2012We hope everybody enjoyed their spring break! We just wanted to remind you that we will be starting the STAR test next Tuesday. Below are the dates and exact times we will be taking the STAR test. Please be sure your child gets enough sleep and a good breakfast! We want to thank our room parent, Heather Smith, for organizing snack donations for the days we will be testing. The students will get a little snack before they start the test each day. Thanks to all of you for donating those items!
