NEWSFLASH

New News:
Dear Parents,
Please keep your children home if they are sick: runny noses (with or without colored run!) and coughing. Many germs are floating around this time of year and we want to keep kids (and teachers!) healthy.
Thanks!

Spelling word and math fact update: If your child is struggling with spelling words and math facts (from the timed tests) please have him/her make flash cards for practice and repetition.

Rainy Day  Recess : Please check with Susan Rosendahl for your designated rainy day recess volunteer day. If you do not have a designated day we need alternate volunteers for classroom supervision. Thanks!

A huge thank you to the families who brought in reams of white copy paper!

I have uploaded this week's newsletter (2-8-10). Just click on the tab for "Weekly Newsletter"

Valentine update: Please have your child address his/her valentines at home and turn them in by Friday. We will have a class celebration on Friday.

Old News:
**Starting January 19, the students will begin taking  timed math tests on addition/subtraction facts to 20. They will be given a time test twice a week (Tuesdays & Thursdays). Once they master a number (2’s), they will move on to the next number (3’s), etc. until they reach 20. It is a first grade standard for students to memorize addition/subtraction facts to 20 by June. All students will start on 2’s. They will have 5 minutes to solve 50 problems. If they miss more than 5 problems, they will repeat that number until they get a score of 45/50 or higher.

We will begin Spelling Tests. I will send home the list of 100 words and information regarding the testing process. Please also check the "Spelling Information" tab which has the same information.
***In math we will begin timed tests in order to prepare the kids for knowing their math facts to 20 (a report card standard).
***In writing, we will continue to work with capitalization and end punctuation. We will also focus on expanding our writing to include describing words and adding more details. This will all be wrapped up in beginning, middle, and end.
***In reading, the children will continue to learn sound spelling rules with review, more long vowels, and digraphs, (oi, oy--boil, foil, toy, royal...)

So as you can tell, we are building on and stepping up the pace in first grade! This is why it is crucial to have your child read (now to you) everyday, to be at school on time, and to be prepared. Now is the time to extend the responsibility to your child to pack their own backpacks, put necessary items in their folders, and teach them independence. With encouragement and guidance from home and school, the children will feel successful, accomplished, and proud of themselves!

Please look at the Centers schedule to make sure of your day and time. If you are listed as an alternate, please check in with Susan Rosendahl to see if you are needed. Also, if you cannot make the day/time, please try to find an alternate or contact Susan Rosendahl ASAP so I can plan accordingly. In addition, if you are volunteering in our class, please remember that information regarding our students is confidential and if there any concerns regarding the children, please address them with me. Thank you!

I have added a H1N1 tab on the Newsflash home page. The document on this page was sent to our Superintendent from the Contra Costa Health Services.
Please encourage your children to use good hygiene practices at home and in school so we can be proactive at this time. Thank you! :)

·        On H1N1.  preventative measures are: Hand washing,

·        cover your mouth and nose,

·        avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

·        avoid sharing drinks, water bottles, silverware, pencils

·        Stay home if you are sick.

·        Get a good night’s sleep

·        Eat healthy foods

If any family would like to donate first grade appropriate board/card games (used games) for rainy day recess, we'd love to have your old treasures. We have enough playing cards and Checkers games!
