HERITAGE PROJECT
The celebration of cultures is approaching fast...Thursday, December 10th! IMPORTANT...Please read the following information carefully.
IMPORTANT...Multicultural Luncheon
-Students dress in heritage style clothing (for luncheon and oral presentation)
-Students bring in a small dish representing their heritage to share at the luncheon (serving for 10 people or more)
DROP OFF OF FOOD: Sorry...NO NUT OR SEAFOOD DISHES!
-If it is a cold dish or dessert, they may bring it to class the morning of the luncheon, or a parent may bring it to our class by 12:00. If it is a warm dish or you are dropping it off after 12:00, please take it directly to the MPR. Please try to have your dish to school by 12:00, so parents have time to set up the tables for the luncheon.
-Luncheon is on Thursday, December 10th from 12:30-1:15 in the MPR with all 5th grade classes. PARENTS ARE WELCOME and encourage to attend, and may dress up too! It's a YUMMY meal you definitely don't want to miss!
-PLEASE, PLEASE consider volunteering at this event. We will need help to set-up before12:30, servers during 12:30-1:15, and a clean-up crew :) after 1:15. It's a fun and social volunteer opportunity, we usually have many parents who want to work. There will be a separate email for volunteer sign-up, so keep an eager eye open for it!

THANK YOU for all your support during this project! I hope many of you will be able to attend this culminating event celebrating your child's wonderful work and amazing foods from around the world!
HERITAGE REPORTS
Students worked on creating an outline for their Heritage Reports (minimum 5 paragraphs) You can find this outline in their homework binder.
I. Introduction
II. Ancestor/Relative who came to America (who, when, how, why)
III. IV. Possible topics: Traditions, artifacts, ceremonies, interesting story, what life was like for the ancestor/relative once in America, another relative, more...
How did they survive when they arrived? How did they find employment, housing, etc.?
Did they speak English when they arrived? If not, how did they learn to speak the language?
What family traditions do you still follow that have been passed down in your family?
Is there any special story about you, or your relatives, coming to America that you would like to share?
Is your daily life different in America than in the country you immigrated from? If so, how?
Is there any special food or recipe that you got from your ancestors or family?
Any family artifact or heirloom?
Any interesting family stories?
V. Conclusion
Please help you child research and discuss the information necessary to write the next paragraph(s) according to their outline, hopefully, they did this last week. Officially, we are on paragraph 3, however, many students have already written 5 paragraphs or more. Thanksgiving is a great time to talk with relatives about this topic. FYI: After Thanksgiving break, we will have one full week to finish writing, then 2-3 days of the following week for revising/editing.
Also, the Thanksgiving break would be a excellent time to work on the Heritage visual (poster/suitcase) see the attached requirement document. I showed students examples in class of previous student work to help them generate ideas.

CLASS CHARITY: East Bay SPCA
I want to update you on our class charity. This year, students decided that they wanted to raise money for a non-profit animal charity. The charity we selected is the East Bay SPCA. We will be collecting plastic bottles and aluminum cans throughout the year, cash them in, and donate the money to East Bay SPCA. We will be competing against Mr. Barron’s and Ms. Chase’s class. At the end of year, the class who raised the most funds will win a party.
