TEACHER RESEARCH!

Last year I conducted research in my classroom through a series of lessons to build my 7th graders' literacy through Amazon.com book reviews. I presented highlights of my approach to other teachers during the summer through the Area 3 Writing Project as well as to local teachers at Harper in January through a Area 3 Super Saturday Workshop. I wrote the presentation as a paper and submitted to the American Educational Research Association. The recent UC Davis School of Education Research newsletter includes a few blurbs.

I am unable to attend the conference on Saturday, April 14th due to financial restrictions, but during the process I received invaluable feedback from peer reviewers. Much of process writing requires revision and accepting feedback and it was great to be in the position to receive feedback for my research and writing.

Ms. Hassan Recommends:

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart (Book 1)

A strange newspaper advertisement encourages children to take a series of tests to determine if they are gifted. Four children succeed and they go undercover at the Learning Institute on Nomansan Island. The children have to gather evidence and foil the elaborate plans of evil Mr. Curtain.

I would recommend this to students who like adventure stories or mysteries and books in a series. You can solve the puzzles alongside the characters. This is well-written and charming. I am working on finishing the third book in the series and still think the first is the best.

The Egypt Game  by Zelpha Keatley Snyder

In The Egypt Game by Zelpha Keatley Snyder, two girls with active imaginations become fast friends. Their names are Melanie Ross and April Hall. They live in the same apartment complex and discover they both love learning about Ancient Egypt. They find an abandoned backyard in an alleyway to set up a place to play the Egypt Game and they make costumes, hold ceremonies, and write a secret code. Eventually many strange events occur and seem to be connected with The Egypt Game.
