GLOBE EDUCATION ACADEMY WORKSHOPS
for STUDENTS and TEACHERS
Dear Students and Families,
This summer, I will be going to London as a member of The Globe Education Academy for Teachers – a premier program of professional development for secondary and community college instructors. The Globe Academy is a partnership of the Mondavi Center for the Arts, UC Davis, Los Rios Community College District, and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. The highlight of the program is a two week residency in London for an intensive study of Shakespeare and the teaching of Shakespeare. In preparation for our work in London, the Academy teachers attend several workshops that introduce us to the techniques we will be learning more about this summer.
Academy Teachers are asked to bring students to two of these workshops –
* Monday, April 30 at Folsom Lake College done and fun!
* Tuesday, May 29 at the Mondavi Center in Davis
I would like to take 4 - 6 students to each workshop; possibly more if a parent is willing to drive an additional 4-6 students.
These workshops will be a fantastic opportunity for students who are interested in having fun while learning more about Shakespeare, theatre and drama, and language...
If you are interested, please let me know ASAP -- in person or by email (cpilon@djusd.net).
Field Trip / Permission Slip Forms for the Tuesday, May 29 Workshop will be due NO LATER THAN Wednesday, May 23!
HARPER JHS WEBSITE!
Our librarian, Ms. Amanda Sharpe, has developed an incredible multi-use site with photos, videos, calendars, and links to many other resources -- including a link to the Harper Library. Take a look! http://harperjhs.chil-es.org./
OPPORTUNITIES for EXTRA HELP and MORE:
My classroom will always be open on Mondays during lunch for anyone needing help with assignments. In addition, I post other "office hours" on my board at the beginning of each week. I am usually available at least 2-3 days a week during lunch and a 2-3 days after school, but times and days change each week due to meeting schedules and other professional or personal/family obligations.
TUESDAYS are "WORD PLAY DAY!" Any student on campus can come to my room during lunch to play games like Apples to Apples, Boggle, Bananagrams, Quiddler, Roots Rummy and anything else involving words. I'll also have challenging word puzzles and other activities available. Come play with language!
HUMANITIES and GATE 9 Students:
You may earn extra credit for attending and reviewing a live dramatic performance. The details are now posted in the "Handouts" section for your class. I look forward to reading about your experiences at the theatre!
FOR FRESHMAN:
Keep in mind that for 9th graders, the First and Third Quarter Grades function more like "progress reports." These quarter grades do not show up on the high school transcript, are not calculated into a student's GPA, and are not reported to colleges. The SEMESTER GRADE is the one that matters!
ABOUT THIS WEBSITE:
Students will find this website a useful resource for succeeding in my classes. Parents will find this site a useful resource for keeping track of the expectations, requirements, and assignments for my classes and for your child.
Weekly Plans and Class Updates are posted in the "This Week in. . . " sections. This info will help students who are absent to know what we did on the day(s) they were gone. Monthly class calendars will be posted in the "Handouts for..." sections.
Most in class handouts will be available in the "Handouts for..." sections for each class. These can be downloaded and reviewed at home, or printed out and completed at home.
Certain handouts and/or forms that are common to all classes will be found in their own sections (for example, the Outside Reading Report Form and the weekly "Roots Based Vocabulary Building" lists.)
Throughout the year, I hope to continue improving this website in order to make it as helpful as possible. Please let me know what you think it might need. You can email me directly from this website.
Looking forward to the year ahead!
