CST TESTING:

Dear Students and Parents,

The 3rd grade will start CST (California Standards Test) testing next week. In 3rd grade there will be 6 days of testing. We will do the official CST Practice Test on Monday, May 7th. We will be giving the English Language Arts CST Tests on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (5/8 through 5/10). The following week we will give the Math CST Tests on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (5/15 through 5/17).

Between today through the end of testing we will be reviewing and taking practice tests (official and approved by California) in class. In my classes (language arts and math) we will carefully go over the practice tests, discuss the test readings, questions, and answers.  These practice sessions can help students get comfortable with the test and the types of questions they can expect.

I believe the 3rd grade has more CST test days than any elementary grade. There is a lot of reading required by the students taking the test. The 3rd grade CST tests are a big change from the CSTs the students took in 2nd grade. A lot more independent reading is required. Also, the reading passages and questions are often difficult and require careful critical thinking. We have been working all year to prepare our students for this test, and will be giving advice and test taking tips over the next several days.

It is important that your child tries to be at school during the testing days mentioned above. It is also important that they be on time. Testing will be first thing in the morning, and if they are too late they will have to report to the auditorium and do a make-up test on another day. From experience, I know that students do better on the test when they take it in their regular classroom with their regular teacher.

Parents can help prepare their children for testing by following a few simple guidelines:

·      As a parent, do not become over concerned about the testing…this can make your child so nervous that they score lower than they could.

·      Help your child see the test not as a threat but as an opportunity to show how well they can do.

·      Make sure your child does not go to bed angry.

·      Plan to stay away from problems before the test. Keep your child in a good mood.

·      Consider talking about the test to reassure and encourage your child.

·      Let your child know that you know the tests can be hard, but that taking them provides an opportunity to show how well he or she can do.

·      Be positive and encouraging.

·      Have your child get up early enough to avoid hurrying. Being on time for school is important.

·      Have your child eat a good breakfast---but not a heavy one. Recess will not be until 10:30 during testing.

·      Have your child dress in something he or she likes, that others like, and that is familiar. Being comfortable is important.

·      Do not appear unconcerned about the testing program. While your child does not need to be afraid of tests, he/she needs to understand the importance of testing.

·      Be positive when you send your child to school.

·      Tell your child to do their best.

·      Reward your child for trying hard on the test.

·      Talk with your child about what was learned from the test. What he/she felt?

A test is a valuable educational tool. We as teachers and educators make basic decisions that affect your child’s education partially based on their CST test results, therefore, it is important that each child is prepared emotionally to perform as best he or she can on test days.

Sincerely....Mr. Lebovitz
