-Bhavagyna, last week's Wizard, showed us how pennies can be "sticky." We counted the number of water drops that could fit on top of a penny before leaking over the sides. Because of the water's surface tension, more drops fit than we expected.
-Miss Ford has been doing a great job of teaching some lessons. Not only has she been teaching lessons in grammar, math, and reading, this week she also taught a lesson on Monet, our Artist of the Month.

I am very excited to have Miss Ford back in the class room with me. She is a natural teacher and I am sure your children are going to love her.

-Welcome Back. I hope you enjoyed your Winter Break. My trip to Costa Rica was amazing. My family and I enjoyed, some zip lining, white water rafting, horseback riding, hiking, sunsets on the beach and some incredible food. But best of all, my daughter, Emily returned home with us after her six month volunteer teaching program. It's so nice to have her home. Happy New Year to ALL!

Our goal is to have ALL Facts memorized to automaticity by spring. And yes...we will take "timed tests."

- We will finish our Metric Measurement topic in Math this week. Next we move onto MULTIPLICATION! We will begin with a few lessons on the concepts ot multiplication and then a review of the multiples of 1,2,5,and 10 . After that we will proceed to the multiples of 3,4,6,7,8,and 9. A set of flash cards is always helpful when memorizing facts. I have several websites on my "Additional Links" that provide multiplication practice. Our goal is to have ALL Facts memorized to automaticity by spring. And yes...we will take "timed tests."
-Over the next few weeks, we will be taking a look at how other countries celebrate the holidays wether it's Christmas, Dwali, Eid or Chanukah. Students have selected a country and are doing research in class to make a brochure. We are learning where so many of our holiday tradtions originated and many new things about tradtions we have never heard of.

-It was great to meet with everyone at confernces. I always enjoy chatting with you as I share your child's progress. I hope that everyone had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving Break as now it is time to gear up for the mad holiday rush.
-Our first Auction was a great success. Students made wise purchases and no one went bankrupt, although a few students spent most of their earnings. Thank you to Mrs. Lai for taking some awesome pictures of the action. I will have a slide show available in the spring at Open House.
-Our math centers will resume this week, so I will see my volunteers on Friday at 10:55ish.
-Information and permission slips for GATE testing will be available in January. All PUSD's third grade students are tested with parent's permission. Testing will occur in February.

-Charles, last week's wizard, showed us that air pressure makes it difficult to pull apart two plungers stuck together in "Plunger Strength."
-Michele, our October 18 Mystery Reader, shared a book called Lotsa da Casha. The main character in this story learned that having friends is nicer than having "Lotsa da Casha" but no friends.
-John, our October 26 Mystery Reader read the book Inch and Miles. This book told us about the building blocks that will help us on our journey to success through two unlikely characters, an incheworm and a mouse.
Aakar, last week's Mystery Reader began reading the book, I was a Third Grade Science Project. This book had us laughing out loud, so we decided that I would finish reading it to them.
-Book Reports are finished and hanging in our hallway. Be sure to arrive a few minutes early for your conference so that you can view them. They are fantastic!
-We will be writing pen pal letters to my daughter, Emily's english students in Costa Rica. We look forward to this friendly exchange of letter writing.
-Our first assigned Story Map is due November 30th. I have been working with your children on my expectations for completing the Story Map. I am sending home a sample of the story map with specific directions.

-Natalia's Wizard experiment showed us how to make glue from milk, vinegar, baking soda and water. When she was finished, we found ourselves in a sticky situation.
-We will be working on our Mystery Book Reports this week. Each night a descriptive paragraph or a summary will be assigned to be turned in the following day. All rough drafts will be returned next Monday so that students can complete their final drafts. If your child is typing his/her report, be sure they save their work. We will begin the work on the artistic portion of the report this week and finish it up next week.

-Charles is this week's Top Dog.-Natalia is this week's Wizard.
-Ben's Wizard experiment, called Cup O' Strength, showed us how strong air pressure can be. We were amazed to see the index card stick to the top of a cup of water as it was rotated upside down. We learned that the air pressure pushing up on the card is much greater than the force of water pushing down.
- By Monday, October 17, students should be finished reading their mystery book and their graphic organizers should be filled in. We will review how to complete the graphic organizers this week as we do one in class for the book, The Chameleon Wore Chartreuse.
-Book Orders are due Friday, October 14. You can order online at Scholastic using the activation code DWQZP. Or, you can complete the order form and pay by check to the classroom.

-Ben is this week's Wizard.
-Jenna's Wizard experiment, called Moving Grains of Pepper, taught us about water surface tension. We learned that a drop of liquid soap can break apart the water's "skin" and make pepper look like it is running to the sides of a pan.
-Lecia Shaffer, our Mystery Reader, read us a couple of stories from The Jr. Clue Club. We had a great time trying to solve the mysteries facing the Jr. Clue Club. But the students of B-3 are great detectives and solved the problems in no time.
-Our Mystery Book Report was assigned last week. Students should read their mystery books over the next two weeks and complete the graphic organizers that were sent home. If possible students should read their book twice. The first time for enjoyment and the second time to aid in the completion the graphic organizers. I have discussed this with your children and many of them felt they would be able to read their book twice. Of course, if they chose a lengthy book, reading it twice may not be an option.
-Our first Math Centers were a big success. Students were very happy and excited to know that Math Centers will continue each Friday. They told me, "It's way better than math." I didn't have the heart to tell them.....It is math! Thank you to my volunteers because without you, we couldn't have Math Centers.
-Sangita Patel, Suzanne Caponigro, Michele Plunge and Delores Gragg are the B-3 Room Moms. You will be hearing from them in the future regarding ways you can help out with parties and schoolwide events. Thank you our B-3 Room Moms for your time and energy supporting our third graders and making this year super FUN.

-Bhavagyna is this week's Top Dog.-Jenna is this week's Wizard.-Ethan's Wizard experiment, called Frankenstein's Hand, very cleverly showed us what happens when baking soda and vinegar are combined. Be sure to ask your children what chemical reaction occurred.-Thank you to Susanne Caponigro, our Mystery Reader, who shared a wonderful story with us titled, The Little Light Shines Bright. Did you know that the Livermore/Pleasanton Fire Station #6 has the world's longest burning lightbulb? It has been buring since 1901 and holds the Guinness Record. You can visit it yourself by going to Fire Station #6 located in Livermore. -Math Centers will begin this Friday. YAY!-Wednesday we will meet our ROP student, Matt McCormick. He is currently a senior at Foothill High School and he was once a third grader in my class. He will be working with us four days a week for a few hours each morning. He will officially begin with us the week of October 3.-This Friday we will meet our Reading Buddies from Mrs. Mendonza's first grade class.

*Thank you to Sharon and Cody Caldeira, for the wonderful Mystery Reader stories. Cody, Ben's uncle, read us a book he wrote when he was in 3rd grade called, Bernie the Lost Bear. Sharon, Ben's grandma, read us a great book about three desert friends, called The Three Javelinas.
*I have all Mystery Reader slots filled until the end of the year. I will publish any openings in 2012 after the New Year.
*On Sept 8, we took our Topic 1 Assessment on Numeration and this week we are taking our Topic 2 Assessment on Rounding. Your child's papers will come home in this Friday's Weekly Progress Packet. Be sure to look them over.
*I would like to start my math center groups on Friday, Sept 30. So volunteers, be sure to look for an email with dates and directions....Coming Soon!
*Each week, I will provide an "Extra Credit/Challenge" math packet for students to complete at home. They will typically be due by the time we finish the matching Topic in math. Completion of this packet in NOT mandatory, but students will receive a reward coupon for turning it in. Students who have a packet have shown an interest in working on it. Please let me know if this is not working for your child.

*Thank you for your classroom donations. I sent home receipts on Friday. Please be sure to check your child's folder for your receipt if you sent in a donation. If you haven't made a donation, but would like to, you can still
send one in at any time.
*Keshav, our first Wizard, showed us how to light up a small light bulb using 3 lemons. The acid in the lemons acted as a battery. Very Cool!
