Book Reports (only 1 per trimester this time) due tomorrow

The class is working on a Literary Analysis activity that takes two days to

responsible for questions 1-3

There will be no homework assigned over the Thanksgiving holiday.

KEEP THOSE READING LOGS CURRENT.

Happy Thanksgiving :)

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Complete reading "A Day's Wait", pp. 74-76. Read carefully; we will have a

in paragraph form. Remember the great hamburger...opening statement, detail,
detail, detail, closing. Your paragraph should be 6-9 sentences.

Be able to discuss question #4 in detail.

why Beowulf was so upset after he killed the Firedrake (hint-there is more
than one reason).

October Reading Log is due on Friday - No Mercy

Spelling Workbook and Test - Unit 8 Friday

Work on your Dark Ages Chronicle. Bring it to class tomorrow so that you can
peer edit and get any needed help from me.

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

October Reading Log is due on Friday - No Mercy

Spelling Workbook and Test - Unit 8 Friday

Writing: Dark Ages Chronicle. Write an eyewitness account from the first
person point of view. Assume that you are a reporter from the nearby village
who comes to hall Heorot the day after Grendel has killed the warriors in the
hall. Interview servants, the king, Hrothgar, his wife, Wealhtheow, Unferth,
etc. Make sure to end your article with a call to action, or reminding people
of the village to be watchful for the menace that is Grendel.

This is due Friday.

Friday, October 23, 2009

The October Reading Log is due next Friday. Remember, No Mercy!

Begin thinking about how you will write an eyewitness account of the attack on
hall Heorot. You can refer to an interview with King Hrothgar and Queen
Wealhtheow, Unferth, or even make up names of servants. You will write this
next week.

Have a good weekend.

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

1.) Spelling workbook and test Friday
2.) "Beowulf" packet VOCABULARY-chpts 4-6 due Thursday
    Map Activity due Thursday

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

1.) Spelling Test - Unit 7, and Workbook due Friday

2.) Your Descriptive Paragraph is due in final form tomorrow. Attach it to
the front of your drafts. This should be typed (Times New Roman, Font Size
12, Double Spaced) or neatly written in blue or black ink, also double spaced.

3.) "Beowulf" packet: Vocabulary, Chapters 4-6 and MAP ACTIVITY due on
Thursday. The map must be neatly drawn (or traced) and labeled correctly.

Monday, October 19, 2009

1.) Spelling Pretest, Unit 7. Make corrections and get your parent's signature

2.) Review your descriptive paragraph. Today you underlined the key idea(s)
in your topic sentence. Now go through each sentence and lightly draw a line
from those sentences up to the key ideas.

3.) "Beowulf" Packet. If you need to download it, please do so. Tonight
complete the bullet points for the background information. Then complete the
vocabulary terms, chapters 1-3 (after the map activity page).

I will begin reading "Beowulf" tomorrow in class.

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Write out your topic sentence for the description of a place in or around your
house. Remember that a topic sentence is a general statement that introduces
a paragraph. Try to make it interesting, but do not pack all of the good
information into the first sentence. Circle your main idea, or key concepts.
Complete writing your paragraph, making sure that each of the sentences that
are in the body of your paragraph directly relate to the main idea.

Keep trying to sell Raffle Tickets for the Halloween Carnival.

Do not forget to bring back the signed yellow copy of your Progress Report.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Study words for Friday Spelling

Create a word bank with POWER WORDS that you can use to describe a small area
in your house. You will be writing a paragraph where you describe, in vivid
detail, something in your house so that the reader can "see" it through your
words.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Finish reading "The Third Level" in the textbook, pp. 64-68. Look at the
Review and Assess questions on p. 68 and be able to discuss them in depth.

Complete Selection Support Workbook, pp. 56 (Vocabulary) and 57 (Spelling). I
will check to see that you have completed these pages neatly.

Friday, October 9, 2009

I was in a training session today. The substitute teacher assigned homework

Here is my gift to you. You will not be responsible for homework tonight.

Have a good weekend.

Unit 5 Workbook and Spelling Test Friday

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

1.) Spellling Workbook and Unit 5 due Friday

2.) Complete reading "My Furthest Back Person" in the text, pp. 46-54. Be
ready to discuss the Review and Assess Questions.

you have written along the way). Staple it to the front of these pages.

Monday, October 5, 2009

1.) Spelling Pretest for Unit 5. Make corrections and get a parent signature

2.) Using the ideas we have been discussing about "building a better burger,"
revise ONE of your compare and contrast paragraphs. Remember that your
paragraph needs to have a topic sentence. All of the details add to the
flavor of your paragraph. A concluding sentence wraps up the idea. Check
Photos/Docs for "Build a Better Paragraph" for ideas.

3.) Remember to log your reading on your Reading Log. I will be checking
them during the month.

Friday, October 2, 2009

The only homework this weekend is to make sure that the reading log has been
downloaded. All reading must be logged in. I will be collecting the reading
logs periodically during the month. Points will be awarded accordingly.

Next week we will "perfect" those compare and contrast composition. They must
be brought back and forth to class so that we can work on them.

Have a good weekend.

Thursday, October 1, 2009

2.) Spelling Test - Unit 4 Friday

3.) Write out two specific sentences that indicate how you will improve your
writing. We will continue to work on the compare and contrast composition.

4.) Download the Monthly Reading Log found in the Photos/Doc section of this
website. This will be collected periodically throughout the month of October
so monitor progress. Please ask me about any books that you are reading to
make sure that they will be accepted. This is very much an honor system, but
parents should be aware of nightly reading. Parents will sign that their
students have been reading.

YOU WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR READING "My Furthest Back Person"

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 (oops...yesterday was the 29th)

1.) Spelling Workbook - Unit 4, Due Friday

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Your spelling workbook, Unit 3, is due tomorrow. Make sure that all sections
are complete and neat.

The spelling test will be given tomorrow.

Compare and Contrast composition:

We spent class time to edit your compare and contrast paper. Each student
was given a rubric that stated what will be graded. These compositions may be
handed in tomorrow. As an option, all students may take the extra time on the
weekend to complete their work. Be careful about this, though. It is a long
weekend, and any work submitted after Tuesday will not be accepted. REMEMBER
TO ATTACH YOUR RUBRIC BEFORE HANDING IN YOUR FINAL (along with the prewrites
and draft(s).)

tomorrow for peer editing and working with me. You will be given a rubric
tomorrow so that you know exactly what you will be graded on.

make the mother's exact words sound like they do in the story.
