SPEECH

PUBLIC SPEAKING EXPLORATORY

OBJECTIVE:

This course will provide students with a basic introduction to public
speaking. Effective oral communication with an emphasis on speech preparation
and presentation skills is important for students as they leave middle school
and move into high school academia. This course offers students the
opportunity to practice and enhance such skills in a safe environment.
Attention is given to development of these fundamental skills:
•To gain confidence (conquer the fear of or control the speech situation); 
•To understand the impact of purpose, occasion, and audience on spoken
discourse; To develop basic concepts in speech which include adequate volume,
pitch, variety, and varied rate, gestures, body movement, and eye contact; 
•To choose suitable topics and organize them in a logical manner; 
•To use standard grammar usage and mature diction which includes a clarity of
enunciation and expression; 
•To develop familiarity with activities such as impromptu speaking, group
discussion and argumentation;
•To organize, develop, and support a chosen topic within a specific time limit;  
•To gain familiarity with the role of communication in resolving conflict; and 
•To gain effective listening skills.

	There will be a variety of types of speeches you will be required to give
throughout the quarter.  You will be allowed to choose your own topics, but
please keep in mind that creativity and originality in topic selection, topic
angle, and presentation style will only help your grade.  Your grade will be
based primarily on your overall class participation, which includes giving and
listening to speeches.  Additional assignments will include group activities,
quizzes, peer evaluations, etc.
