Grading

Grading Procedure

Grades in Middle School Music Program come mostly from PERFORMANCE-BASED ASSESMENT, since Music is a Performing Art.  Grades will be based upon:

Performance  Performances are the most important thing we do.  They make up the biggest part of your grade.  To make a grade of 100 in performance, you must be on time, with the required materials, and must behave maturely.  We will provide a calendar of all performances at the beginning of the year as well as provide an information sheet approximately one week before the event.  It is your responsibility to coordinate your schedule so there are no conflicts.  If there is a conflict, notify the band directors immediately so that we can help arrange a solution.

Practice Cards  Practice cards are used to monitor student practice outside of rehearsal.  To be effective, practice cards rely on the integrity of the teacher, student and parent.  Practice cards require organization and discipline.  Practice Cards reflect a full week of homework assignments, and therefore infractions will be written if you do not turn them in on time.  Late practice cards will be accepted, however the infraction will remain in your discipline log.

Playing Tests  Playing tests are used to assess the individual ability of each member of the ensemble.  They may be done in class, at home, with a computer, or in small groups.  We will usually announce playing tests in advance to allow for practice time.

Inspections   The best musician in the world cannot make music without all the required materials.  Inspections may be announced in advance, or they may be done in surprise fashion.  Always have your instrument in working order, choreography notes, and all of your music and all required accessories including a pencil.

Written Work  Written work will be used to evaluate a student’s ability in note reading, rhythm comprehension, and music theory or music history.

Class Participation   We expect you to work as hard as possible everyday, and contribute to an overall positive atmosphere in the classroom.  This preparation also includes having all required materials everyday.
