READING RECORD with the vocab tracker on the back. You will need to keep track
of your reading on binder paper once you are done with the green reading
record. You will have to transfer the info when we get back on Monday the
4th. I paged 4th period to come to room 4 after school and only about 1/2 of
the class showed up.

1. Read and fill out your reading records, and vocab trackers (green and
pink). The green one will be collected on the first block day. The pink one
will be checked for the first week total and initials on the first block day.

2. NO vocab flash cards due on first block day.

3. Expect an Effect will be due on the first block day.

Then you write out the topic sentence for the middle paragraphs and do
"bullet notes" for the evidence. It's an outline. We'll do a homework check

Those of you who were absent for "...Red Death" there is an audio link
to download next to the original story at the top of this page. Download the
"HQ" version. After reading and listening to the original, go to the "Shmoop
Summary" and read that. Then read the "Schmoop Plot Analysis" After that
answer the "Schmoop Study Question" 1,2,3 on a right sided page in your notebook.

2. "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" Plot Diagram and How to Write a Movie Review
are due on block day. There is a link above for the movie in four parts on
youtube if you need to watch it again.

Those of you who were absent for this film, need to watch this on youtube.
First, print out this Plot
Diagram and fill it out as you watch "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." This
was originally written as a short story by Washington Irving, who is a classic
American author. This video, produce by Disney, is very true to the original
story, especially the way Ichabod Crane looks! Enjoy!

1. Read 20 to 30 minutes (all at one time)both days. Fill out your reading
record (gold).

2. Fill out the gold vocab tracker as you read with words new to you.

3. Five vocab study cards (flashcards) due next BLOCK day (total of 25)

4. Work on improving your “My Name” composition in a Word document. When
finished, copy and paste it into Criterion. Remember to use BLOCK
paragraphing, no indenting. Make the corrections Criterion suggests.
Criterion will underline unusual names. Also, we have a one sentence word
that Criterion will probably mark as incorrect. That's o.k. I don't count
those as an errors. If you don't make the Criterion corrections, you can't
get anything more than a C grade. This will be due next Friday, October 19th.

5. Read the article about the 13 year old Dutch girl who wants to sail around
the world on her own. Summarize this on a right sided page in your notebook.
Under the summary do some jot notes (or brainstorm) about your opinion about

The student store has Mead Vinyl covered, three section
notebooks for $4.00 on Tuesday and Thursday at brunch.

1. Read & fill out your reading record. Have your reading record signed by

an adult

2. Fill out your bookmark with unfamiliar words as you read.

For those of you who could not get on pbwiki today here is what you do:
A.) Click on the pbwiki link above Friday's date
B.) Click on the button on the right that says "request access"
C.) Check your e-mail periodically this weekend for the pbwiki approval
e-mail
D.) Open the e-mail and click on the hydelanguagearts2 link
E.) Once you get to that page, in the "name" spot put the first two
letters of your last name and the first three letters of your first
name (no spaces)
F.) type in the password for your e-mail
G.) click save
H.) when the next screen appears bookmark it (make it a favorite)
I.) click on hydelanguagearts2 and you will be on the front page for the
class. You may look around. You can try to follow the directions
for creating your own page. If you don't do it correctly I can
delete
it and you can create it again in language arts on your block day.

Period 1 & 3 read Monday homework

1. Read Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Fill out your reading record and

your parents initial
it in the right hand column. As you're reading, look for words that aren't
familiar and write them on
your bookmark with the date and the page number.

2. Write a reading journal response for Tuesday night and one for Wednesday
night:

A,) Choose one of the sentence starters and develop it into a full
paragraph. Underline the
sentence starter. It doesn't have to come at the beginning
of
the sentence or paragraph.
B.) Write a little about what you read and a lot about your opinion
about what you read.
C.) Write these reading responses on page two of your language arts
notebook (it is a right
sided page... if you need another page continue on page 4,
which will also be a right sided
page).
D.) Write in blue or black ink.
E.) Don't forget to put the date in the margin and the title of
your
book right next to it.

3. The student information sheet I gave you on the first day is due on
Thursday.

4. The "Dear Parents" letter I gave you last Friday is due on Thursday.

5. If you didn't have your pbwiki permission letter signed, bring it in on

1. READ!! Reading is the most important thing you can do to improve your
education and your chances in life. Research has proved that students only
read 7 minutes a day in school. You need to be reading 30 to 45 minutes a
day to improve your reading by one grade level each year.

2. Bring your signed pbwiki permission letter on your block day.

3. “Ten Things You Should Know About _______” due on block day. Write
in complete sentences. Use blue or black ink.

4. Complete the "Alphabet Soup" worksheet, in ink, for a homework check on
