How can I help my child select a book at the correct reading level?

The five finger method of book selection:
1.  select a book that looks inviting
2.  turn to the middle section of the book
3.  begin to read a page somewhere in the middle section
4.  place one finger down for each word on the page that is not known
5.  count the number of fingers down when the page is complete
6.  check the following guide to see if the book is at the correct reading 
    level

      *  1 or 2 fingers down, the book may be too easy
      *  3 fingers down, the book is probably just right
      *  4 or 5 fingers down, the book may be too difficult
