Welcome

Muir Library is open from 8:30 to 5 PM on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. We 
close at 4PM on Wednesdays and Fridays. Students may visit before school, 
during lunch, after school, and during classtime with teacher permission. 
Classes may sign up to use the resources or receive instruction.

Muir library supports both academic and recreational reading.  The mission of 
the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective 
users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished : 

·  by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats 

·  by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest 
in reading, viewing, listening, and using information and ideas 

·  by working with other educators to design learning strategies 
to meet the needs of individual students 

Learning activities may include: 

·  activities that develop cognitive strategies for 

1. selecting, 

2. retrieving, 

3. analyzing, 

4. evaluating, 

5. synthesizing, and 

6. creating information 

      at all age levels and in all curriculum content area 

· experiences that encourage users to become skilled creators of 
information through introduction to the full range of communications media 
and use of the new technology 

· activities that accommodate a wide range of differences in teaching 
and learning styles and in instructional methods, interests, and 
capabilities 

· the use of resources that represent a diversity of experiences, 
opinions, and social and cultural perspectives, all of which support the 
concept that intellectual freedom and access to information are prerequisite 
to effective and responsible citizenship in a democracy. 

Information Literacy

Library skills are no longer taught in isolation.  Information literacy  
skills, which include traditional library skills,  will be taught in 
conjunction with classroom assignments.  See the attached information 
literacy standards.

Standard 1: The student who is information literate accesses information 
efficiently and effectively.

Standard 2: The student who is information literate evaluates information 
critically and competently.

Standard 3: The student who is information literate uses information 
accurately and creatively. 

Independent Learning 
Standard 4: The student who is an independent learner is information 
literate and pursues information related to personal interests.

Standard 5: The student who is an independent learner is information 
literate and appreciates literature and other creative expressions of 
information.

Standard 6: The student who is an independent learner is information 
literate and strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge 
generation. 

Social Responsibility 
Standard 7: The student who contributes positively to the learning community 
and to society is information literate and recognizes the importance of 
information to a democratic society. 

Standard 8: The student who contributes positively to the learning community 
and to society is information literate and practices ethical behavior in 
regard to information and information technology.

Standard 9:  The student who contributes positively to the learning 
community and to society is information literate and participates effectively 
in groups to pursue and generate information.

LIBRARY PRACTICE 

Welcome to Library Practice!  This is an elective class that offers work experience.  The tasks 
students do in the library at Muir are essential to the operation of the facility, and students 
who learn procedures and discipline are prepared to work in other libraries and institutions.  
All students are expected to sign in daily and to record their work activity. Students may read 
or do homework if daily assigned work is completed.

Students are graded according to the standards below:


*Follow procedures for processing and circulating library media materials as directed by library 
media teacher and library technician. This includes shelving materials accurately. 	(70% of 
total grade)

Student works daily for an average of at least forty minutes with excellent accuracy	
       A- Student is on task daily; works with accuracy    	
       C- Student works but makes mistakes

*Demonstrate the ability to locate information through the use of standard reference materials 
as well as electronic resources. (20% of total grade)

       A- Student completes a web project	
       B- Student works on a web project 
       C- Student does not complete written assignments, but works during class time.

*Assist other students in locating and using library media materials, 
equipment, and information retrieval systems. (10% of total grade)	

        A-Student assists patrons as directed.	
        B-Student assists patrons occasionally.	
        C-Student does not assist patrons, but learns procedures.	
        D-Student interrupts patrons—U in citizenship 

ASSIGNMENTS: A grade-90% B grade-80% C grade-70% D grade-60%


We appreciate the dedication of our library workers.  We will notify parents of students who are 
receiving less than a C grade.
