Technology Plan

Muir Alternative School Technology Site Plan 2005-6

Mission Statement:

·         To offer students computer technology training and experiences.

·         To provide students with access to computers for research so that students learn to find, evaluate, and use online information effectively.

·         To use the web as tool to communicate both to students and parents.

Goals: 

·         Expand current research capabilities for students through guided internet use. 

·         Provide secondary students with honors and advanced placement courses  through distance learning currently unavailable on s

·         Provide staff with workshops and on-site training to integrate technology with curricula, as on-site mentors for distance learning classes, and for communicating assignments and information to students and parents.

Hardware and Support Materials: 

·         Upgrade existing hardware for internet/distance use. 

·         Increase internet-capable computers to allow secondary students access  for distance learning courses and online research. 

·         Increase internet-capable computers to allow whole-class teaching, both  for on-site classes and mentoring distance learning classes. 

·         Purchase a data projector and screen for use in teaching technology  skills, research techniques, and for mentoring distance learning classes.

Mastered Knowledge and Skills by Grade Level:

GRADE 2:

    Hardware:      Identify: monitor, CPU.

                     Use mouse and keyboard.

    Software:         Start up and quit applications.

    OS:                 Start, shut down, restart.

                           Insert and remove disks, CD's.

    Keyboarding/Word Processing: 

                            Recognize and locate letters on a keyboard.

                            Enter text and line break (character keys, space         

                                     bar, return/enter key).

                            Delete text.

                            Insert and move cursor (arrow keys, mouse).

   

GRADE 5/6

    Software: Create a new document.

                    Use save as, save, open, close, print appropriately.

                    Choose appropriate page orientation.

    OS:          Understand desktop, window manipulation, zoom box, close box, 

                             resize box, finder/program manager, application/finder menu.

                    Select printer.

                    Use file management including file, delete, copy, backup, format 

                             floppy  disk and cross-platform file transfer

    Keyboarding/ Word Processing:

                    Use shift, question mark, period and comma keys.

                    Format and edit text by highlighting font, size, style.

                    Replace or delete existing text.   

                   Change justification and line spacing.

                   Cut, copy and paste text within document.

                   Use spelling check.

                   Enter text at 30 wpm.

                  Demonstrate correct home row position.

    Graphics:  

                  Use Delete, coy, paste, cut in graphics program

                  Use editing tools in drawing and painting (select, add color 

                             and  pattern, resize, crop, erase)

    Spreadsheet:  

                  Read and interpret information in a spreadsheet.

                  Enter, edit and delete information in a spreadsheet/graphing program.

    Multimedia:

                  Navigate through a multimedia presentation.

    Telecommunications:  

                  Log-on to e-mail server with user name and password.  Send, 

                                 retrieve and read e-mail messages.

GRADE 8

    Hardware:  Identify  and use VCR, digital camera, audio players, TV

                      Identify and use printer and other ports

    Software:   TBA

    OS:            Use file management including file, delete, copy, backup, 

                                 format  floppy disk and cross-platform file transfer.

    Keyboarding:

            Format document (margins, headers, footers, page numbering)

            Create multi-column documents

            Use find/replace, thesaurus, user/custom dictionaries

            Merge data from database into word processing document (e.g., form letter)

    Graphics:  Use proportion, balance, contrast, emphasis and unity

            import and export graphics (eps, tiff, pict, jpeg, gif)

            Know appropriate type of graphics application to complete a given 

                         task (drawing, painting or photo enhancement)

    Spreadsheet:  Format cell attributes (columns, rows, justification, styles, number)

        Use data from a spreadsheet to create charts and graphs.

        Use basic formulas for adding subtracting, multiplying, dividing, averaging 

                     and determining percents.

        Use fill down for multiple entries of the same value or number.

        Set decimal place accuracy.

    Multimedia:  Import different file formats (graphics, sounds, video,etc.)

        Use pinciples of design (proportion balance, contrast, rhythm, emphasis, unity)

    Telecommunications:  Use the Internet to research a topic.  Cite references

         Consider the accuracy and validity of information on the INternet.

         Attach a document to an e-mail message.  

         Save a graphic.

         Create an Internet homepage.

    Graphics:

        Plan, organize and save multimedia files with attention to file size and 

                 media storage.

    Spreadsheet:

    Multimedia:  Use age-appropriate multimedia authoring hardware and software.

         Integrate various media

         Save captures media from various audio and video sources

         Use non linear editing program to edit captured media

         Plan, organize and save multimedia files with attention to file size and 

                     media storage.

    Electronic Presentation: 

        Use appropriate software to create an electronic slide presentation.

   Telecommunications:  Read NewsGroup messages.  Subscribe to a ListServe.
