Lib. Work Syllabus

LIBRARY PRACTICE 2004-5

Welcome to Library Practice!  This is an elective class that offers work 
experience.  The tasks students do in the library at Muir are essential to 
the operation of the facility, and students who learn procedures and 
discipline are prepared to work in other libraries and institutions.  All 
students are expected to sign in daily and to record their work activity.  
Students may read or do homework when daily assigned work is completed.

Students are graded according to the standards below:

ASSIGNMENT	A grade-90%	B grade-80%	C grade-70%	D grade-60%

*Follow procedures for processing and circulating library media materials as 
directed by library media teacher and library technician. This includes 
shelving materials accurately. 	(70% of total grade)

Student works daily for an average of at least forty minutes with excellent 
accuracy	
    A-Student works daily for an average of at least thirty minutes with 
accuracy	
    B-Student works daily for an average of at least twenty minutes with 
accuracy	
    C-Student works fewer than twenty minutes a day (or longer with many 
mistakes)

*Demonstrate the ability to locate information through the use of standard 
reference materials as well as electronic resources. (20% of total grade)

     A-Student completes introductory materials, a Word Project, and a web 
project (maintenance or info. lit.)	
      B-Student completes the introductory materials and another projects 
each semester.	
      C-Student completes the introductory materials.	
      D-Student does not complete written assignments, but works during class 
time.

*Assist other students in locating and using library media materials, 
equipment, and information retrieval systems. (10% of total grade)	

        A-Student assists patrons as directed.	
        B-Student assists patrons occasionally.	
        C-Student does not assist patrons, but learns procedures.	
        D-Student interrupts patrons—U in citizenship 


We appreciate the dedication of our library workers.  We will notify parents 
of students who are receiving less than a C grade.  We plan a field trip to 
the Mesa College Library in the spring for all workers.  

LIBRARY PRACTICE 1,2 (8301, 8302)

Course Description: One- or two-semester course–grades 7—12 (multiple credit 
allowed).

This course familiarizes students with the organization and operation of a 
school library or media center. Areas of emphasis are 
·	circulation of books and audiovisual materials,
·	shelving and management of materials and equipment, 
·	receipt and processing of books, magazines and audiovisual
                        materials,
·	and the operation of library and media center equipment including 
automated library management systems  and electronic resources. 

Major Outcomes

Students will:

·	Follow procedures for processing and circulating library media 
materials as directed by library media teacher and library technician  

·	Demonstrate understanding of the Dewey Decimal System of 
Classification by locating materials in the collection and correctly shelving 
materials 

·	Identify the information in the catalog and use it to locate 
materials in the collection. 

·	Demonstrate the ability to locate information through the use of 
standard reference materials as well as electronic resources. 

·	Assist other students in locating and using library media materials, 
equipment, and information retrieval systems.
