 Mrs. Hill’s First Grade Newsletter
                  September 18, 2009
Hello Hero Parents!
Dear Parents, thank you for all of your support with the Ice Cream Social Basket. I appreciated
all the generous donations. A special thank you to Mrs. Ley who put together our basket and worked
hard to get it ready for the social. Thank you Mrs. Ley! We went on our first field trip on Friday. We
had many chaperones which allowed me to take pictures of the different groups. Parent support on
field trips is very helpful, so thank you for making the time to chaperone! The next field trip is a
walking field trip to Laguna Town Hall, when we begin our Open Court Unit on Neighborhoods at
Work. I will give more information when we return from off track. I typed an additional note on the
homework this week requesting three pictures of your child - baby, toddler, and kindergarten. We
will be making a time line of ourselves the week of October 28th. I have attached an envelope to this
newsletter to put the pictures in. I would prefer a photocopy of the pictures (black and white is fine).
If you don’t have access to a copier, I will copy them for you and return them to you the following
friday. Thank you for gathering those for our next in-class project.
Our picture make up day is coming up - see the yellow flyer that was sent home! Date of Make-
up: September _______!!!
Cookie Dough Pick up is on _____________________, September ______ afterschool in the Multi-
purpose room.
I’ve decided not to enter our class scarecrow in the park event, because of the possibility of publicity
and pictures being shown of the students. However, we do have a class scarecrow that we are
making together. The class has decided to make the face of our scarecrow a lion. I thought that was
creative and fun idea. We will also be signing our autographs on the scarecrow’s sun hat and our
buddies will be adding a scarf. We will be putting our scarecrow in the garden area to scare away the
birds! We’ve planted our fall harvest. We planted spinach, red romaine, and snow peas. I am hoping
to make a delicious class salad in December for all of us to enjoy. In Spring, when we return from off
track, the students will be planting bean seeds in our classroom room window and will also be
planting seeds in our garden. I think this will be a valuable experience for them. If you have a
garden at home and would like to share some of the items and experiences that you’ve had, please
let me know!
Report Cards will go home on October 2nd. I would like to meet with all parents the week of
September 28th. I will be holding parent conferences T, W, Th afterschool. I have put together a
parent conference schedule. If this time and day does not work for you, please let me know and I will
reschedule to a day and time that works best. Thank you in advance for making this time available
to meet with me.

Below are a few more important notes for the week:
Students attended a new workshop group this week. Students are learning about sentence writing,
building word sorts, phonemic awareness, and phonogram practice.
In terms of our academic week:
We will finish our Things that Go unit next week! I will start our Neighborhoods at Work by
Wednesday of next week! We learned many sound spellings in this unit, namely sh, th, ch, wh, ar, er,
ir, and ur!
In Writing, we worked on writing about hot air balloons. We completed a paragraph using a
structured web. Prior to writing about hot air balloons, the heroes completed three guided, practice
paragraphs about land, air, and water transportation. The hot air balloon writing was an independent
writing. We will be making hot air balloons next week and have them finished by the time we track
off.
In Math, we started Chapter 3, working on subtraction! We have also been taking our Rocket
Math test everyday. We will be taking our subtraction test early next week.
In Social Studies, we’ve completed our study of rules and laws! We made a Class Constitution
and Bill of Rights! They also drew a portrait that I attached to the Class Constitution.
We didn’t study Science this week.
In PE, we’ve been working on developing gross motor skills. We’ve been running laps around the
grass area early in the morning!
