Homework

January 6, 2011

Dear Parents,

For homeschool this week, please complete the following assignments with your child.

·      Reading:  Read for at least 20 minutes each day.  Please make sure to fill in the enclosed reading log. Library Visit! Please take time this home school day to CHECK OUT a Non-Fiction book.  For Writer’s & Reader’s workshop next week, we will continue to learn how to use our non-fiction book as a research tool to help write our Informational Books.  Remember, books should be around your scholars reading level and can be found in the Junior Section in your local library.  Have a scholarly discussion with your child about the topics they know about and would love to learn more about.  If they are stumped, remind them they already brainstormed 5 topics in class! No need to stop them if they desire to bring in more than one book.

·      Spelling: Please give your scholar their spelling quiz in their composition books.  Grade the spelling quiz and go over any words they have missed.  Encourage your child to use the spelling patterns that they have sorted for at the beginning of the week!

·      Grammar: Please complete the review worksheets with your scholar.

·      Math: Please complete the Homelink and extend in any way you see fit.

·         Social Studies: Time For KidsKids Count”.  Please read the Time For Kids magazine and choose one or all of the following activities:

-       Sequencing: Signal words and phrases are used to explain a sequence of events. Copy the sentences from the story that begin with then, next, after that and finally on cards. Ask your child when Penny Harvest begins (September), then mix up the cards and have them place them in order.

-       Action: Tell your child that before kids at P.S. 1 decided which groups to donate money to, they first made a list of community needs and issues they cared about. Have your scholar do the same, and make a plan about what they can do to help others.

-       Research: Check out the website www.commoncents.org to learn about the history of Penny Harvest and how to start a harvest at your school.

Enjoy your weekend,

Mrs. Landau

Spelling Homework

Monday - Thursday: Choose one activity to do each night. Be sure you do a different activity each night. Please make sure to write the date and a heading on each page.

Activity Choices:

  • Sentences: Use 10 of the words in complete sentences. You may use 2 or 3 words from the list in the same sentence! Circle the spelling word you are using.
  • Alphabetical Order (ABC Order): Sort your words in alphabetical order, then copy into your booklet.
  • Vowel & Consonant: Use two colors when you write your word - one for vowels, one for consonants.
  • Word Hunt: Hunt through a book you are reading at home for your spelling words OR words that are further examples of the sound pattern you are studying. Record your findings in your booklet.
  • Buddy Check (Pre-Test): Have someone at home call out each of your words to you. Close your eyes and try to see each word in your mind. Then open your eyes and write it down in your booklet. Have the other person check your spelling.

On Friday you will give your child a Spelling Quiz at home, so pay attention to patterns while you are doing your activities during the week!
