What is the purpose of homework in Math?

Just as practice is required when one is learning to play a musical
instrument or preparing to perform in a play, practice is an essential
component of learning math. Students cannot learn to do math unless
they do math problems on a regular basis to experience firsthand the
concepts presented in class and to practice skills.

Homework is a tool for learning and, as such, is not "graded" in the
same way as a quiz or test. It is expected that there will be incorrect
answers on homework assignments. Students are not penalized for
incorrect answers, but are penalized if they come to class without their
work on the assignment (each problem attempted and work shown).
The student's ability to participate in class depends upon having worked
on the homework. Students who come to class without the homework
receive a zero for that assignment.

Homework is discussed in class, and students have an opportunity to
ask about the problems with which they had difficulty. Then by
reworking the problems they missed, students learn from the mistakes
they made and concepts become clearer.

One strategy for studying for a math test is to rework homework
problems, especially those which were more challenging and those
with which the student had difficulty when first assigned. If the concept
or problem solving method is still not clear, the student should seek
extra help well ahead of the night before the test.
