Classroom Policies

In general, classroom rules and regulations follow all school rules
regarding attendance, tardies and behavior.

1. CITIZENSHIP GUIDELINES

* Be in class, be on time, be prepared.
* Maintain a positive attitude.
* Show courtesy and respect to everyone in the class.
* Raise your hand to answer or volunteer.
* No electronic devices (e.g. cell phones, ipods) are allowed during class.
* Stay in your seats until the bell rings at the end of the period.
* Keep the room clean.
* No eating or drinking (water is permitted) unless it's a special "food day".
* Leaving the classroom during instruction is highly discouraged. Excessive
absences during class time will result in loss of participation points.

2. CLASS WORK, HOMEWORK AND MAKE-UP WORK

* Students are expected to do the assigned work, take notes in class and
  participate in classroom discussions.

* Students are responsible for any work missed while they were out of class.

* All missed work must be made up. One day is given for each day missed.

* Any work not turned in or made up on time is a zero.

* Any major project that has been assigned in advance is due on the due date.
I will accept it late with full points possible only in case of an excused
absence. Otherwise, projects can be turned in the day after they were due
but they will be graded down one letter grade. If a project is two days
late it can only earn a maximum of 50%. After two days, the student will
receive a zero for not completing the assignment.

* Make-up times for missed tests are through scheduled appointments outside
of class time at my convenience. A second make-up time will only be given
if the student has a reasonable excuse for missing the first appointment.

* HOMEWORK is an important part of this class and will be assigned, checked
and recorded regularly. Most weeks there will be three or four assignments
but sometimes there might only be one or two. Please check the "Homework
Page" daily to find out if there is homework for that day.

The assignments are usually small and should take about 10-20 minutes to
complete based on the class level and the abilities of the student. Each
homework assignment is worth 10 points. I check homework at the beginning
of class the day it is due and give the students credit for completeness.

This means that a student can get full points if he or she seriously
attempted to do the assignment even if there are a few mistakes. I will
not give points however if I can see that a student did not take the
assignment seriously (e.g. I catch the student copying from somebody else
or if it is obvious that the student did not follow instructions).
A student will receive half credit if he or she did half of the assignment
(e.g. half of a grammar handout).

* Each student is supposed to have a NOTEBOOK that he or she needs to bring
to class every day. These notebooks are to include all handouts, class
  notes and homework.

German 1&2: Notebooks will be checked in class at the end of each quarter.
French 1 A student can receive a maximum of 25 points for the notebook
based on completeness, organization and neatness.

German 3&4: Notebooks will be collected at the end of each semester. They
are worth 50 points and will be graded on completenes,
              organization and neatness.

ALL CLASSES: The points for the notebooks will fall under the
participation category. If a notebook is turned in after
the due date it will be graded down 5 points each day it is
late. The latest day to turn it in will be two days after
the due date unless the delay is due to an excused absence.
