NUMBER CLUB

As a supplement to the district adopted math program, student have the opportunity to challenge their math skills with the following two “clubs”.  The Number Club is introduced in September. The Addition-Subtraction Fact Club is introduced in October.

Writing numbers in correct sequence helps with counting and place value. Several times a week, students work on their Number Club folder for a few minutes. When a student writes the numbers correctly from 1 to 100, the student is listed on the 100 Club poster. Next, the student will work on numbers 101 to 200 to be listed on the 200 Club poster. Numbers must be written correctly and all digits must be formed correctly to receive recognition.

It is very easy to support this activity at home. Just grab a piece of paper and ask your child to write from 1 to 10 in the first row, then 11 to 20 in the second row and so on. Once your child writes to 100, begin a new page with 101 to 110 in the first row. Keep going! Remember that all numbers must be formed correctly and written neatly. Students usually write to at least 1,000 by the end of the First Grade year.

Special thanks to Mrs. Schwartz who shared the idea of the Number Club!

ADDITION-SUBTRACTION FACT CLUB

This club introduces students to addition and subtraction facts in a methodical way along a developmental continuum of increasingly more difficult strategies.  Targeted practice at the beginning of each worksheet illustrates the pattern found in the strategy and that strategy can then be applied to the mixed practice problems at the bottom of the sheet. Students soon discover the exciting news

that the use of strategies pares down the number of facts to memorize--only 10different addition facts!
