A message from our principal

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year. We are looking forward to our 22nd exciting year. We plan for it to be a rewarding learning experience for all our students. Our focus will continue to be on creating a positive, respectful, safe school climate so our students may focus on the business of learning and meeting the State Standards and Benchmarks. We will let you know how you can help at Back To School Night.
Wednesdays will continue to be minimum days for all students. Please be sure to check the daily schedule in this handbook to find out the release times for each grade level. All students will continue to participate in LIFE (Learning Is For Everyone) time everyday. We will be setting aside 30 minutes each day where students will be grouped according to need and work with a teacher on a specific skill. We will also continue to implement math and language boards daily.
Our goal at Laurel School is to provide a quality education to each and every student. This means developing the academic and social skills of each student to the highest degree possible. To help each child achieve the greatest degree of success it is important that teachers, parents, and administrators communicate openly and frequently concerning the progress of students and the school’s programs.
One way we communicate and promote a good relationship between home and our school is through our Student/Parent Handbook and our school website. The purpose of these tools is to share the school’s procedures and policies as well as to provide general knowledge about Laurel School. They also serve as references for guidelines and expectations, and include a calendar of events. We hope you find them helpful. Parents are encouraged to contact the school with any questions, suggestions, or concerns.
Laurel School has a proud tradition of academic excellence, positive self-esteem, and parent involvement. Let’s continue to work together and make this year one of the school’s best.

Extended Day Learning Center
The goal of the Extended Day Learning Center is to provide an engaging learning environment that builds on a child's confidence, and where age appropriate, motivating academics and life skills are supported. This collaborative opportunity between school, home, and community provides a secure place and an enriching program that meets the needs of working parents/guardians and students alike.

The program offers enrichment classes/support at a students current school site that include curriculum support for grades Kinder-5th, art, music, physical activity, sports, play time, free time for exploring, learning and sharing, science, drama, crafts, peer tutoring, book clubs and life skill practice. Students spend the first part of their after school day having a snack and then working on homework followed by other fun activities. The program provides a comfortable, stress-free setting with a paraprofessional available to help students with homework questions and projects. The EDLC incorporates consistent teaching strategies that are practiced through the District.
