Course Description: This 7th grade course is designed as an 18-week program to develop keyboarding skills, understand the basics of PC computer, and learn concepts, skills, and strategies of Internet use and Microsoft software to support learning and research. Students will evaluate and think critically about electronic information and communication, while using it safely and ethically. Students will use Web tools to enhance their learning experiences and prepare them for high school and beyond. As students advance, they will be given opportunities to explore their interests further by creating digital stories, websites, and more.

- Keyboarding Skills - Typing Time
- Computer Basics – History, Hardware & Storage, File Management
- Ethical & Responsible Computer Use
- Word Processing - Microsoft Word
- Internet Basics, Safety/Cyberbullying, Research Skills
- Presentations & Multimedia - Microsoft PowerPoint
- Digital Stories - Photostory, Intro to Photoshop
- Web 2.0 tools – Blogging, Wikis, and Podcasting
Grading Policy: Grades are assigned according to the following and are cumulative:
A = 90-100%; B = 80-89%; C = 70-79%; D = 60-69%; F < 60%.
Student Behavior and Expectations: All students are expected to follow classroom rules, computer use and network access contract rules, and school rules of the Wildcat Way. Consequences are given when appropriate, and successes are celebrated and rewarded.
Classroom Rules:
1. No food, gum, candy, or drinks (exception is water away from computer desk)
2. Be on time for class, be in your seat before the bell rings, and work the entire class
3. Do not talk while the teacher is giving direct instruction to the class
4. Do not create a situation that prevents learning
Computer Use Rules:
1. No e-mail, instant messaging, or chat rooms
2. Stay away from inappropriate websites and follow teachers instructions regarding computer use
3. Use only your account and don’t disclose your password
4. Do not vandalize the computer equipment, headphone, mouse pads, etc.
Refer to WJUSD Network Access Contract for all other terms and conditions.
Consequences: (May use any combination of below, and are cumulative throughout the Electives Dept.)
- Verbal warning
- Conference with teacher and/or change of seat
- Writing assignment
- Time-out and/or detention
- Call home and/or sent to village leader
Rewards: Rewards are given to students for their effort and participation with PAT (Preferred Activity Time) and other incentives throughout the course.
