Every student in Room
14 will have a S.T.A.R. binder.
S.T.A.R. binders will go home daily and must be returned the next day.
The S.T.A.R.
binder is an important, new organizational tool for my Room 14 students.
Using the
S.T.A.R. binder successfully will help your child to establish responsibility
and good organizational skills – vital skills that can follow them throughout
his/her time in school.
Parent participation and help is required to make the S.T.A.R. binder a
successful tool!
Please note:
School
newsletters and other notices generated from the school office will be coming
home on Thursdays in your child’s Leitch folder.
Here are some important Do’s and Don’ts for students to remember:
DO's
·
Do take very good care of your S.T.A.R. binder – we will be using it all year
long.
·
Do take your S.T.A.R. binder home every day and bring it back to
school the next morning.
·
Do show your parents your S.T.A.R. binder every night and go over any
homework, unfinished work, or notes with them – they will be so proud of your
new responsibility!
·
Do put your completed homework in the homework pocket of your S.T.A.R. binder
– I will collect homework every Friday – decodable books can stay home for
extra practice.
DON'Ts
·
Don’t leave your S.T.A.R. binder at home, in the car, or at a friend’s house.
·
Don’t get your S.T.A.R. binder dirty; don’t eat or drink around your S.T.A.R.
·
Don’t make any marks or drawings in or on your S.T.A.R binder.
·
Don’t put extra papers that have nothing to do with school in your S.T.A.R.
binder.
·
Don’t let someone borrow your S.T.A.R. binder – these are for Rm. 14 students
only.
·
Don’t take pages out of the plastic sleeves in your S.T.A.R. binder – leave
everything in your binder (let your parents or the teacher take things out).
S.T.A.R. Binder Overview
|
Left Side Binder Pocket:
Papers to be left at home
|
This is where I will put papers to be left at home such
as: corrected work, reminders, notes, newsletters, etc. These should be
removed from the S.T.A.R. binder every day by the parent. I will dispose of
any items remaining in this pocket every Friday.
|
|
Right Side Binder Pocket:
Papers to return right away
|
This is where I will place documents requiring a parent
signature such as field trip permission slips, or other documents. Please
check this pocket daily. Read, sign and return to school.
|
|
Zipper Pocket:
Money and Notes
|
This is where you should put all money to be brought to
school including: lunch money, field trip donations, book orders, etc.
Students should take this money out at school only when the teacher asks
for it. This is also a good place to put doctor's notes, other notes
for absences, etc.
|
|
Notebook Paper:
Parent/Teacher
Communication
|
This is where parents can
write a note which requires only a quick, short response from me.
Date your
notes, and leave these pages in the S.T.A.R. binder so that we may both have a
record of our communication. If you require a personal conversation about
your student's progress or any other school-related concern, please call or
email me for an appointment.
|
|
Classroom Behavior Plan
|
Our classroom rules and classroom constitution com next.
Good behavior will be rewarded with a daily sticker on the calendar (next
item). Leave this in the binder. You will be provided with a copy to keep at
home.
|
|
Two-Month Calendar
|
Next is a two-month calendar. Check daily for the good
behavior sticker! Leave this in the binder.
|
|
Reading Log
|
A monthly "Be Enthusiastic About Reading"
(B.E.A.R.) reading log will be added to your child's binder each month. List
books (other than decodable books!) that are either read by your child or
by you to your child. Let me know if you need extra pages.
|
|
High Frequency (HF) Words
|
The front page lists HF words for each reading unit.
The back pages should be returned to school when you feel your student has
memorized a list and is ready to read the words to me.
|
|
Other:
|
Other items may be added as needed at a later date.
|
|
Clear Folder Pocket:
Homework & Decodable Readers
|
This pocket will contain the weekly homework packet and
decodable readers. Homework packets will go home every Monday and are due
back every Friday. Books should remain at home for extra practice.
|
Help your child to be a responsible student by maintaining their S.T.A.R.
binder!
