MILLER CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS
Below is a listing of some of
the clubs and organizations currently meeting at Miller. Meetings and updated information are

This club lets you have fun
with other middle- and high-school students while doing great things for our
community. All students welcome, so come
to room 19. We meet twice per month at

Tuesdays from 3-4 pm in room 28. No meetings on the first
Tuesday of the month. Players of all
skill levels welcome.

Fish Club: Sponsor:

The fish club is a voluntary
club of students who are willing to learn how to maintain fish tanks- both salt
and fresh. Students meet on Mondays
at lunch in room 7. There are weekly and
monthly responsibilities beyond the daily feedings. It is a win-win situation
for Miller as the students really learn to set up tanks on their own and
Miller’s fishes receive needed maintenance and attention. (If school is closed on Monday, then Fish
Club will meet on Tuesday.)

Jazz Band –
Sponsor: Ms. Moser; Instructor: Mr. Steve Tyler
Students in Jazz Band have
the opportunity to work with Mr. Tyler, an accomplished, professional jazz
musician, on jazz styles, interpretation, and improvisation. Rehearsals are Wednesdays
at 7:45 AM and Fridays at 3:15 PM. Second semester of Jazz Band begins
Wednesday, Feb. 6. Any Miller Band
students may attend the first meeting for free, no obligation (beginning band
musicians should be “advanced beginners). After that, students who wish to join
need to register and pay the second semester tuition by Friday, Feb. 8. Students who took Jazz Band first semester
need to re-register and pay tuition again, if they wish to continue. The Jazz
Band will perform in concerts and will participate in a Music in the Parks Band
Festival at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

An audition-only vocal music
club that meets every Monday after school from 3:15-4:30
pm and Wednesdays from 8:20-9 am.
Students participate in three to four jazz festivals throughout the
second semester, going as far away as Folsom, next to Sacramento.

National Junior Honor Society
Sponsors: Mrs. Alyassini,
Mrs. Bandyopadhyay and Mrs. Cohen
The membership to this club
is based on scholarship (honor roll) and the completion of an in-class essay.
Members must maintain their status on the honor roll for four quarters once
they have been invited and must additionally do ten hours of pre-approved community
service hours within a particular time frame. The final induction ceremony is
held at the end of the eighth grade year.

This Noon League Basketball
program at Miller is for 6th graders. Students sign-up to be placed on a team.

Peer Mediation

Peer Mediation is a group of
7th and 8th graders who assist Miller students in managing conflicts and
maintaining a safe campus community.

club in which students help others in need. We meet on Wednesdays at lunch in

Audition based. The 10-member band is a small group ensemble.
TheString Band practices and performs traditional
American music, also known as “Old Time”, traditional, or bluegrass music. Students with experience on violin, mandolin,
guitar, and string bass make up our performing band. Class will meet every Wednesday from 3:15 to

Miller Tennis Club: Sponsor: Mr.

Tennis club members usually
meet on Fridays 3:30-5:30 PM during two sessions Sept-Dec and March-May.
During Sept-Dec, members have
an opportunity for ladder play, free play, and possibly coached sessions and
within school tournaments. Those interested in representing Miller in MTP
middle school tournament should signup in September and complete minimum
required ladder matches before the end of December. Usually you will be able to complete the
requirement even if you are participating in another sport/activity during
Sept-Dec.
Selected club members
participate in the MTP tournament where they compete against other middle
schools in Silicon Valley, during March-May session.
Selection of the team will be
based on Ladder rankings in first session, USTA rankings and try-outs.

OTHER ACTIVITIES –
After School Sports:
The Miller after school sports
program is open to all grade levels and offers a wide variety of team and individual
sports. Try-out dates for each sport are posted in the daily announcements link
on Miller's home page. All interested students must try-out for softball,
volleyball, basketball and soccer. Students who wish to participate in cross
country, wrestling, and/or track & field automatically make the team as
long as they are able to attend the practices.

After School Programs:
Miller provides classroom
space for these organizations to conduct their programs. They handle sign-ups, registration and fees,
and provide their own instructors.

Cupertino Parks and Recreation – After School
Enrichment Program
Parks and Rec sponsors
fee-based classes in public speaking and debate, writing, chess and art. Pick up a catalog in the office, your nearest
public library, or at the Recreation Center.

Y-University at Miller (Northwest YMCA Teen Center After-School Program)
This is a fee-based program
operated by the Northwest YMCA, open Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 pm at
Miller. YMCA leaders conduct the program
which consists of a program, homework time, and activities. Please call the YMCA at 408-351-2433 for more
