ANNOUNCEMENTS
September 21, 2009

TO ALL MILLER STUDENTS AND STAFF

1.	Magazine Drive:  Our next turn-in day is tomorrow - Tuesday, Sept. 22nd. 
You still have time to turn in 20 orders by that date.  Prize?  Limo Lunch on
Oct. 1!  Wow! 
**Bonus!  Receive a giant cookie and ice cream at brunch next Friday (Sept.
25)!  How?  Turn in 3 new orders on the last turn-in day (Tues, Sept. 22) or
have accumulated 10 or more orders.  **More order forms are available in the
office.  **On-line orders count toward your total if you print out receipts.  

2.	WEB leaders, please come to an important meeting on Wed. Sept. 23, at 8:40
in the gym.

3.	Yearbook:  Something new!  For yearbook we have an eShare account for
students, parents, and teachers to download their pictures.   We will have a
competition for the best photo submitted by a Miller student.  I would like

4.	Math Olympiads:  7th and 8th graders! – Last day to register for Math
Olympiads is Wednesday, Sept. 23.  Go to room 15 at brunch and sign up with
Mrs. Manolescu. The contest is held after school on Wednesdays, November 18,
2009, December 16, 2009, January 13, 2010, February 10, 2010 and March 10, 2010. 

Sports	

1.	Wrestling: The first beginning wrestling clinic is set for Wednesday, Sept.
23 in the mat room from 8:15 to 9:30 am.  The next sessions will be held Sept.
30, and Oct. 7.  

2.	The 6th and 7th grade girls softball team played another close game on
Thursday against Columbia Middle School.  The lead shifted back and forth
between the Mustangs and Columbia throughout the game. Despite their best
efforts, the girls lost by three runs. Key hits were made by  Megan Beumeler,
Alyssa Kiefel, Heather Evans and Avanti Mehrotra. The girls have their first
home game against Cupertino on Tuesday and they'd like to have some Miller
support!

Clubs / Meetings / Special Interest 

1.	Science Club will meet today at lunch in Room #9.

2.	Chess Club:  Chess club will meet after school tomorrow (Tuesday) from 3 to
3:45pm in room 28. 

3.	Science Fair:  Students interested in participating science fair this year
must write a 100-word paragraph explaining why they would make good candidates
for the science fair.  Please turn in  the essay to Mrs. Popescu in room 12 by
Sept. 30th. 

4.	More Science:  Cassini scientist for a day is a science competition
sponsored by NASA. Entries are due Sept 30. More info on Mrs. Popescu's

5.	Red Cross Club: Please support the American Red Cross by going to the
fundraiser this Wednesday at Chili's.  For more information, please pick up a
flier in the office.

6.	Miller Reflections: Enter your artwork in the PTA Reflections  contest. 
Inspire others by sharing your talent with the Miller community.  This year’s
theme is ‘beauty is…’ You can dance, write, draw, paint, direct, compose
music, choreograph, and share what is beautiful to you!  Rules and entry forms
are in the office. The deadline is a month away, October 16th.  Be creative today!

7.	8th Grade Graduation - 8th Grade Graduation Event Planning and Kick-Off
Meeting:  Please join Diana Malone and Jean Fujiki, Wednesday, October, 7th at
7:15 p.m. at Miller Middle School in room 17.  At this meeting we will begin
planning for that wonderful graduation event in June.  Please join us!   If
you are interested in participating with the graduation celebration, but
unable to attend this meeting, please contact Diana at 408-865-0930 for more
information.  Planning this occasion has been a lot of fun in the past.  Hope
you can be a part of this special event planning for your student.  Any 6th
and 7th grade parents are welcome to attend! 

GATE REFERRAL PROCESS TESTING SCHEDULE
Fall Testing Only For: “New-to-District” students (Grades 4 – 8)

Referrals will be accepted beginning: August 24, 2009 
Deadline for Fall GATE Referrals: September 25, 2009
(Referrals received after September 25, 2009 will be returned to the school site.)

The focus of Cupertino's Gifted and Talented Education Program is to identify
and serve those students who have demonstrated exceptional intellectual
ability and outstanding academic achievement. Referrals for Gifted and
Talented Education (GATE) testing may be initiated by teachers, parents, or
the student. If you have a current “new-to-district” student you would like to
have tested this fall for the Gifted and Talented Education program, please
contact your child's teacher  or school office for a referral form.

TO ALL MILLER STUDENTS AND STAFF

can watch the video announcements?  Best Buy has a new contest called At 15. 
 Teens (age 13-18) who are registered members on at 15.com can nominate their
schools to win a Teach@15 Award. Teen members can vote once a day for 15 days
for one nomination. The school with the most votes will win $1,500, second
most votes wins $1,000 and third most votes wins $500. We need all students
aged 13 and up to register TODAY!  Remember you can vote once a day, every day
until they announce the winning school!  So register today at:

Interested in developing amazing oratory and debate skills? Want to face off
against middle school students from across the state and country? Then join
Miller Speech and Debate! Come out to an informational meeting this Thursday
at 3 pm, in the community room to find out more!  

2.	Yearbook:  Something new!  For yearbook we have an eShare account for
students, parents, and teachers to download their pictures.   We will have a

5 and team 6. The game was close at first and then team 6 went on a 10-0 run
to win the game 27-13. The players of the game were David from team 5  Kyle
and Neeraj from team 6.  Thursday game will have team 1 playing team 3.

2.	The 6th and 7th grade girls softball team The 6th and 7th grade girls
softball team lost to Cupertino yesterday but Theresa Prada was able to keep
the score low with great pitching and fielding. The girls are taking on the
8th grade girls team after school today in a friendly scrimmage so come on out
and cheer for your grade level team!

September 25, 2009

TO ALL MILLER STUDENTS AND STAFF

1.	Bike Safety:  This is a reminder that you must WALK your bicycles on
campus, especially when you are in the drop off zone in front of the school. 
Do not zigzag around the buses that are coming in or leaving the parking lot.
 Be careful of students walking in that area.  We want everyone to be safe,
whether you are on wheels or using foot power.  

2.	Magazine Drive Limo Lunch:  CORRECTION:  Limo Lunch is next Thursday, Oct.
1, not today.  

3.	Magazine Drive Bonus!  Students who accumulated 10 or more orders will
receive a giant cookie and ice cream at brunch today.  

4.	All WEB leaders and delegates who will be student guides for the Toyokawa

5.	Math Olympiads:  6th grade students interested in trying out for the 6th
grade Math Olympiad teams, please visit Ms. Nelson's website to sign up. The
try out test will be during zero period on Tuesday, October 6th.  If you have

Sports	

1.	The 6th and 7th grade girls softball team:  Theresa Prada hit her first big
homerun yesterday and knocked in two runners to help the Miller Mustangs fight
back to a 10-10 tie against Egan yesterday.  Other strong hitters of the game
included Claire Yuan and Laura Hatton.  Great work, team! The girls play
against Graham on Monday.
