This Summer, Give Your Sons and Daughters a Chance to Succeed

A big part of life is learning to solve problems. Engineers thrive
on finding solutions. They combine math and science with creativity, and use
their brains and hands to build things to solve problems. Your child can be
introduced to what engineers do, as early as their summer before 6th grade.

The Tech Academy of Silicon Valley is a grassroots program to help
students explore and improve the skills needed to pursue college level work in
engineering, technology and science.

Last summer 277 students took part in the Tech Academy at San Jose
State University, Santa Clara University and Sobrato High School in Morgan
Hill. This year, classes will also be offered at California State
University-East Bay and Alsion Montessori School in Fremont.

Tech Academy sessions focus on themes of energy, water and high technology.
Most of the learning occurs through team collaboration and hands-on projects,
like building and racing solar-powered model cars and ‘deconstructing’
discarded cell phones to identify components.

The three-hour a day, three-week sessions target students
interested in math and science. Each session, whether the Regular Academy, or
one of the Advanced offerings, costs $300, and is an opportunity for students
of all backgrounds.

Fellowships are being offered for students requiring financial assistance.
The Regular Academy has morning (9am-Noon) or afternoon (1pm-4pm) sessions,
starting June 23rd and July 14, and three Advanced programs will start July 14
at San Jose State University.

Opportunities for Families with High School Sophmore and Junior Students: The
School of Engineering at Santa Clara University will host an exciting program
designed for high school students who are considering engineering as a
possible major in college. This program is called Spring Engineering
Education Days (SEEDS). All high school sophomores and juniors are eligible.
SEEDS is offered at NO COST!!! Sessions will be held on April 5, 12, 19 and
26. Students will take both lecture and hands-on courses taught by
engineering faculty. Come explore engineering topics not normally available
to high school students and focus on the actual use of engineering tools.
Interact with current engineering students, get college admissions advice and
learn about possible internship opportunities. Last year's schedule included
sessions on: Robotics, Solar Energy, Analog signals and Engineering design.
Application deadline is February 8, 2008. For more details, go to

WHAT IS THE CALTRANS SUMMER ENGINEERING INSTITUTE PROGRAM?

The Caltrans Summer Engineering Institute (Caltrans SEI) is a unique program
in District 04, which consists of a two-week residential program at a
university campus, where the students are exposed to science, math and
engineering. The purpose of the institute is to expose students to the
engineering profession early on in their education and encourage them to make
engineering their career of choice.

The program accommodates fifty (50) high school students and will be held at
the San Francisco State University - School of Engineering from Sunday, June
15, 2008 through Friday, June 27, 2008.
